With Grand Theft Auto VI locked in for a November 19, 2026 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the hype cycle has taken an unusual detour: a leaked, years-old prototype build of the game’s map is now playable, ported by modders into the PC version of GTA V.

The map traces back to a Rockstar Games hack from a few years ago that first spilled early GTA VI footage online. Researchers recently combed through an additional leak of nearly 200GB of files and found a 2015-era prototype map for the game buried inside, well before the title’s public unveiling.

What the Leaked Map Actually Shows

Modders have since ported that prototype city layout into GTA V on PC, and early footage shows players driving and even flying around a rough version of what would become Leonida, the fictional state built around Vice City in the final game. The build is far from finished: many buildings lack full textures, vegetation is largely absent, and the ground is covered in flat, blurry placeholder textures reminiscent of stitched satellite imagery. Still, the broad city layout and road network are clearly recognisable.

Because of copyright concerns, most outlets aren’t hosting direct footage, but X user Synaptic (@Synaptic_UK) has been posting extended gameplay clips of the mod in action, and as of this week those uploads haven’t been hit with DMCA takedowns, letting the clips circulate widely among fans dissecting every corner of the leaked build.

How This Differs From the Final Game

Rockstar has had years since this prototype was built to refine Leonida’s geography, so the shipping version of GTA VI in November is expected to differ meaningfully from what’s in the leak, both in layout details and, obviously, in visual fidelity. The official map has already been previewed through Rockstar’s own trailers, which show a fully realised, densely detailed Vice City rather than the placeholder shell modders are currently exploring.

The timing adds to an already busy few weeks for GTA VI news: Rockstar recently confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a 34-track soundtrack collection tied to the game’s release, alongside pre-order bonuses like the Vintage Vice City Pack. With under two months to go before launch, expect leaks, mods and marketing beats like this to keep colliding right up to release day.
