Germany, Spain, Portugal: List of the Only Five Teams to Score 7+ World Cup Goals This Century

7+ World Cup Goals. In a single World Cup match. It is a feat so rare, so ruthless, so complete that it has happened only five times in 26 years of 21st-century football. And Germany just did it again.

Germany’s 7-1 Demolition of Curaçao Puts Them in Elite Company

Germany thrashed World Cup debutants Curaçao 7-1 in Houston on June 14, with goals from Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz (two), Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, and Deniz Undav. It was a masterclass in organised aggression — and it was historic in more ways than one.

With that seven-goal showing, Germany became the all-time top scorers in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing Brazil’s tally of 238 goals and taking their own total to 239. They have now scored 7+ goals in a World Cup match more times than any other nation.

The Exclusive Club — List of the Only Five Teams to Score 7+ World Cup Goals This Century

It is only the fifth time this century that a team has scored seven or more goals in a World Cup game — and remarkably, Germany are responsible for three of those five occasions.

The Stories Behind Each Demolition

Germany opened their 2002 World Cup campaign with an eight-goal humiliation of Saudi Arabia, inspired by a hat-trick from Miroslav Klose — his first three World Cup goals, the beginning of a journey that would culminate in a record-breaking 16 career goals at the tournament.

Portugal’s 7-0 win over North Korea at the 2010 World Cup was the only fixture in the group stage in which Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates found the back of the net — and they certainly made it count.

Brazil’s darkest day came in 2014, when Germany raced into a 5-0 lead inside 29 unforgettable minutes in Belo Horizonte — a semi-final humiliation on home soil that remains arguably the most shocking result in World Cup history.

Spain then strolled to a seven-goal win over Costa Rica at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — a statement of intent from La Roja that set the tone for their entire tournament.

And now, 2026. Germany again. Bigger, faster, more clinical than ever — and with their sights firmly set on a fifth World Cup title.
