Fortnite and Epic Games Store Land on EU iPads Thanks to New EU Regulations

The European Union’s fans of Fortnite rejoice! Thanks to last week’s decision by the European Union, Battle Royale is making a triumphant return for iPad in this region.

This is a result of an ongoing battle between Apple and Epic Games, which could have major implications for the distribution of apps on Apple’s products.

The EU Cracks Down on App Store Gatekeepers

The Digital Market Act of the European Union is a driving force for this change. The aim of this Regulation is to promote fair competition in digital markets and to prevent companies from acting as “gatekeepers” that hinder innovation and consumer choice. The EU has designated iPadOS as one such gatekeeper, opening up the possibility of a different app store being available for iPads.

Epic Games (Developers of Fortnite) Seizes the Opportunity

Soon after, Epic Games, the developers of Fortnite, announced plans to bring both Fortnite and their own Epic Games Store to the EU iPad in 2024. Apple’s dominant position in the distribution of apps on its devices is immediately challenged by this action.

What This Means for EU iPad Users

Users in the EU can expect more choice when it comes to downloading apps and games, with the launch of the Epic Games Store for iPad. This could result in lower prices and a broader range of titles to choose from. In addition, Apple may be forced to relax its restrictions on the development and distribution of applications, which are also beneficial for users.

Changes Limited to the EU (For Now)

It should be noted that these changes are only applicable to EU countries at present. At this time, you will not be able to play fornite on iPads and the Epic Games Store in other regions. However, this decision could set a precedent with regard to the adoption and implementation of such regulations by others.

The Future of App Distribution on Apple Devices

Apple is obligated to comply with the DMA regulations within six months. This could lead to significant changes in the way apps are downloaded and disseminated on Apple’s iPhones and iPads. It is still to be seen whether these changes will facilitate the transfer of applications between developers and Apple’s platform.
