In 24 days of spectacular World Cup football, the tournament had achieved something almost miraculous in 2026 — it had almost nothing to do with Donald Trump. That era ended on Sunday. And the global football community is still reeling.

Folarin Balogun’s Red Card Suspension Was Lifted: What Happened?

FIFA reversed Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-game suspension after President Donald Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to ask for a review of the red card that led to the ban. The call reportedly took place on Wednesday — the same night Balogun was sent off in the USA’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.

FIFA, in a statement on Sunday, said that “the implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year.”

The result? Balogun — the USMNT’s top scorer with three goals — was cleared to play against Belgium in the Round of 16 on Monday in Seattle.

The Trump-Infantino Connection

This story doesn’t exist without context. Trump has enjoyed a close relationship with Infantino, the president of FIFA, which awarded Trump its inaugural peace prize last year. Infantino also gave Trump 10 tickets valued at $15,000 to last July’s FIFA Club World Cup final, where Trump joined Infantino on the field to present the trophy.

Trump confirmed he called Infantino but said: “I didn’t tell him what to do. I can’t tell him what to do.” Infantino, meanwhile, insisted his disciplinary bodies operate independently.

The Outrage — By the Numbers

“Crossed a red line”	UEFA	“Unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable”

Why It Matters Beyond This Game

There is no known precedent for a political leader pressuring FIFA about who can play in a game, let alone one so important to a host nation’s chances of advancing. The implications are enormous — if FIFA invokes these hazy powers for the host nation’s star striker, what happens when another powerful world leader makes the same call for their player?

The reversal appears to be the first time since 1962 that a red card during a World Cup didn’t result in a suspension. Sixty-four years of consistent precedent — gone in a single phone call.

Football has politics. But this time, politics had football — and the world noticed.
