Disney Honors “The King” With A New Jack Kirby Plaque At Avengers Campus

Every hero needs an origin story — and on his 109th birthday, the man behind so many of them finally got a permanent tribute of his own.

Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure unveiled a brand-new plaque honoring Jack Kirby, the legendary artist behind some of pop culture’s most iconic characters. Born on August 28, 1917, Kirby co-created heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Panther, and the Fantastic Four — and is officially recognized as a Disney Legend.

A Tribute Fit For The King

The plaque, placed near the entrance to Avengers Campus, includes a quote from Kirby himself: “If you look at my characters, you will find me. No matter what kind of character you create or assume, a little of yourself must remain there.” The private unveiling ceremony brought together Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Stephen Wacker, members of the Kirby family, and Disney Imagineering leadership, capped off with a surprise appearance from The Thing — one of Kirby’s most beloved creations.

Disney California Adventure Park VP Brent Davies told attendees that Kirby’s work “continues to remind us that heroes can come from anywhere.” Fans visiting the park are also encouraged to spot examples of “Kirby Krackle” scattered throughout the area — the artist’s pioneering visual effect used to depict cosmic energy.
