Digger Final Trailer: Tom Cruise Turns Oil Baron in Alejandro Iñárritu’s Wildest Satire Yet

The final trailer for Digger has dropped, and it’s unlike anything Cruise has done before — no death-defying stunts, no espionage, just pure satirical chaos. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Birdman and The Revenant, the film marks a sharp tonal left turn for both star and director.

What’s the Story?

Cruise plays Digger Rockwell — a wealthy, aging oil baron whose drilling empire accidentally triggers a global catastrophe. What follows is his desperate, darkly comedic scramble to climb out of the very hole he dug, both literally and morally, before the world pays the price for his greed.

The trailer, running just over two minutes, leans hard into biting satire, built around a tagline that says it all: “With Great Power Comes Great Deniability.”

Digger: Key Details

Why This Cast Has Everyone Talking

Beyond Cruise, Digger is stacked with serious acting firepower. John Goodman plays the President of the United States, while Riz Ahmed and Sandra Hüller — both known for elevating morally complex roles — round out a cast that also includes Jesse Plemons and House of the Dragon breakout Emma D’Arcy. With Emmanuel Lubezki (three-time Oscar winner for cinematography) behind the camera, expect this satire to look as stunning as it sounds sharp.

A Big Swing After Mission: Impossible

This film arrives right after Cruise wrapped his decades-long run as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, a globe-trotting finale that saw him race to stop a rogue AI from seizing global weapons control. Trading espionage thrillers for dark satire is a bold pivot — but pairing with a director like Iñárritu suggests Cruise is chasing prestige and reinvention rather than repeating a formula that’s already made him a legend.

It’s a reminder that even at the top, longevity in Hollywood often means knowing exactly when to zig instead of zag.
