DC Box Office: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Acting Debut Opens To Rs 22 Crore — Can It Hold?

A director stepping in front of the camera is always a gamble. For Lokesh Kanagaraj, it’s paid off — at least for now. His acting debut DC has wrapped its opening weekend with Rs. 22 crore at the Indian box office, closing out the first three days on a genuinely promising note.

Directed by Arun Matheswaran and co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi, the Tamil action drama saw its biggest single-day jump on Sunday, adding Rs. 10 crore — a sharp 48% spike over Day 2. That kind of weekend growth usually signals strong word-of-mouth, and for a film riding almost entirely on Kanagaraj’s massive reputation as a director rather than as an actor, that’s an encouraging sign.

Where DC Is Finding Its Audience

The territory-wise numbers tell an interesting story. DC pulled in around Rs. 7 crore from Tamil Nadu — solid, though arguably underwhelming for a film built around a hometown filmmaker’s screen debut; trade watchers would have liked to see a double-digit weekend there. The Telugu states weren’t far behind, contributing Rs. 6.50 crore, while Kerala (Rs. 3.75 crore) and Karnataka (Rs. 3 crore) rounded out a fairly even spread across South India. The rest of the country added Rs. 1.75 crore.

What Happens Next?

The real test starts now. DC needs a strong Monday hold to prove its opening weekend wasn’t just a curiosity-driven spike, and the film has a tight runway before facing fresh competition — Vishwanath & Sons, starring Suriya, arrives from the second weekend onward and could eat into its screens and footfalls. Trade estimates suggest DC should ideally cross the Rs. 30 crore mark in India before that clash hits.

For context on just how far Kanagaraj has come to get here, his rise from a corporate short-film contest winner to the architect of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe makes his pivot to acting all the more notable — a filmmaker known for directing hits now testing his pull as a screen presence.

Whether DC turns into a certified hit or a modest performer will likely be decided over the next week of weekday collections — the real barometer for any film without a holiday cushion.
