‘Crew Girl’ Review: A Familiar YA Formula That Still Rows Its Way Into Your Heart

Netflix’s newest teen drama swaps ice skates for oars, but the recipe feels awfully familiar. Crew Girl follows the well-worn YA sports-drama playbook — underdog lead, messy love triangle, family scandal — yet somehow still manages to hook you, thanks to standout performances and a surprisingly emotional character arc.

What The Show Is About

Crew Girl follows 16-year-old rowing prodigy Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), whose life is upended when her father goes on the run after a business scandal. Relocating to a new prep school with no girls’ rowing team, she joins the boys’ crew as coxswain, getting tangled in a love triangle with team captain Josh Regis and easygoing teammate Cam Dillinger.

Crew Girl: Overview

Why It’s Worth Watching Anyway

The show shares clear DNA with Netflix’s earlier hit Finding Her Edge — both share an executive producer and nearly identical core storylines. But Crew Girl stands out through its rowing backdrop and one standout arc: Sam Braun’s Josh Regis, a bratty rich kid who slowly earns genuine emotional depth by the finale. Miku Martineau also continues to shine, delivering a performance that balances vulnerability with commanding confidence.

Not every thread lands — the parents’ subplot feels flat, and the criminal father storyline exists mostly as a plot device. Still, the ensemble crew members feel distinct rather than filler characters, and the show’s team-sport themes about unity under pressure give it more heart than expected.
