Bruno Fernandes Breaks Premier League’s Most Assists Record with 21 Assists in a Season; Henry & De Bruyne Dethroned

Twenty-three years. That’s how long Thierry Henry’s record stood — an apparently untouchable monument to creative brilliance from Arsenal’s greatest ever season. Kevin De Bruyne matched it in 2020. And on May 24, 2026, on the final day of the Premier League season at the Amex Stadium in Brighton, Bruno Fernandes didn’t just equal it. He shattered it.

The Manchester United captain broke the record for the most assists in a single Premier League season after reaching 21 — surpassing the historic mark shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, who both recorded 20. A corner kick. A Patrick Dorgu header. History made.

Premier League’s Most Assists in Season — The Record Books Rewritten

The 33rd Minute That Changed Everything

Fernandes entered the final day on 20 assists — tied with both Henry and De Bruyne at the top. With United already guaranteed to finish third, the sole mission of their season finale was to steer Fernandes to the all-time record. It took just 33 minutes — Fernandes delivered a perfect corner, Dorgu powered home the header, and the record was his.

The Portuguese playmaker also finished the season with eight goals and was named Premier League Player of the Season — a double honour that cements 2025-26 as the finest individual campaign in his Manchester United career.

A Record That Silences Its Critics

Not everyone has celebrated without caveat. Only 10 of his 20 assists came from open play, compared to Henry (18) and De Bruyne (17) — with the remainder coming from set pieces. Critics argue that dead-ball assists are less artistically significant than open-play creativity. Fernandes himself addressed it with characteristic directness: “These records only exist because of my teammates,” he said — acknowledging that assists require clinical finishers at the other end.

But here’s the counter-argument: perfecting set-piece delivery in the modern Premier League — with every team analysing your delivery data — is a skill in itself. Henry had 18 open-play assists with a generational Arsenal side built around him. Fernandes had 21 in total, under Michael Carrick, driving United to a third-place finish largely on his own creative engine.

According to the Premier League’s official statistics portal, Fernandes now has 72 league assists for Manchester United since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020 — making him one of the most productive playmakers in the club’s modern era, trailing only Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, and David Beckham in the all-time United assist charts.

What It Means for the World Cup

With 106 goals and now a historic assist record, Fernandes heads into the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico as one of European football’s most in-form playmakers. Portugal, with Fernandes pulling the strings in midfield, arrive as genuine dark horse contenders.

Henry’s record lasted 23 years. De Bruyne matched it. Bruno Fernandes broke it — on the last day of the season, with a corner kick, exactly as the record deserved to fall. Dramatic, precise, and utterly inevitable.
