Brad Pitt Returns as Cliff Booth: Tarantino’s Script Meets Fincher’s Dark Vision

Two of Hollywood’s most distinct filmmaking styles are about to collide in the same film. The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, the long-awaited sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has officially unveiled its title, cast, and a firm release date — and the pairing behind the camera is unlike anything fans expected.

From Tarantino’s Script to Fincher’s Chair

Brad Pitt returns to his Oscar-winning role as stuntman-turned-fixer Cliff Booth, this time set in 1977 — eight years after the original film, in what’s described as a dramatically changed Hollywood landscape. The screenplay comes from Quentin Tarantino himself, but directing duties have shifted to David Fincher, known for his dark, meticulous style in films like Seven, Fight Club, and The Social Network.

Tarantino originally planned to direct the sequel himself but stepped away in 2025, reportedly wanting his final film to be something entirely original rather than a return to familiar territory. Fincher was the only other filmmaker he felt comfortable handing the script to — and because Fincher holds an exclusive directing deal with Netflix, the project’s home shifted from Sony Pictures to Netflix as a result.

Brad Pitt: Key Details

A Stylistic Clash Years in the Making

This marks the fourth collaboration between Fincher and Pitt, following Seven, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Where Tarantino’s original film leaned into warm, nostalgic “golden hour” visuals, Fincher is expected to bring his signature colder, more atmospheric tone — a contrast that has fans and critics alike curious about how the two sensibilities will blend on screen.

Behind-the-Scenes Shakeups

Principal photography wrapped back in January 2026, but the film is now undergoing significant reshoots as of August 2026, including the reconstruction of major sets. Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, unavailable due to scheduling conflicts with The Batman: Part II, has been replaced for these reshoots by longtime Fincher collaborator Jeff Cronenweth, best known for his work on Fight Club and The Social Network.

Who’s in the Cast?

Joining Brad Pitt is a stacked ensemble: Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Peter Weller, alongside several newer additions rounding out the cast. Notably, Leonardo DiCaprio has confirmed he will not be returning as Rick Dalton, and actor Holt McCallany has also clarified he isn’t part of the project despite earlier casting reports.

The film continues Netflix’s broader push into theatrical releases, following a growing trend of streamers experimenting with limited theatrical runs to boost prestige titles — a shift widely discussed across the modern landscape of film distribution.
