The COVID-19 virus outbreak has been declared a pandemic by WHO. It has caused the lives of people to come to a standstill and accounts for many deaths worldwide. All aspects of the world have been affected by the Coronavirus. All football matches have been suspended till April.
UEFA have now officially announced that they have postponed the EURO 2020 by 12 months. The European Championship will now take place in 2021.
UEFA today announced the postponement of its flagship national team competition, UEFA EURO 2020.
The EURO 2020 play-off matches and international friendlies, scheduled for the end of March, will now be played in the international window at the start of June.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said while announcing the decisions: “The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and, in that spirit, UEFA tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football. There was a real spirit of cooperation, with everyone recognising that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result.”
“It was important that, as the governing body of European football, UEFA led the process and made the biggest sacrifice. Moving EURO 2020 comes at a huge cost for UEFA but we will do our best to ensure that the vital funding for grassroots, women’s football and the development of the game in our 55 countries is not affected. Purpose over profit has been our guiding principle in taking this decision for the good of European football as a whole.”
“I would like to thank the European Club Association, the European Leagues and FIFPro Europe for their great work today and for their cooperation. I would also like to thank from the bottom of my heart the 55 national associations, their presidents and general secretaries, and my colleagues from the Executive Committee for their support and wise decisions. The fine detail will be worked out in the coming weeks but the basic principles have been agreed and that is a major step forward. We have all shown that we are responsible leaders. We have demonstrated solidarity and unity. Purpose over profit. We’ve achieved this today.
“I would also like to thank Alejandro Domínguez and CONMEBOL, who have agreed to move CONMEBOL’s 2020 Copa America in order to follow the recommendations issued by the international public health organisations to enact extreme measures and as a result of EURO 2020 being postponed. This means that clubs and leagues in Europe will have as little disruption as possible in the availability of their players. These joint efforts and especially this coordinated and responsible decision, are deeply appreciated by the whole European football community.
“I would like to thank FIFA and its President, Gianni Infantino, who has indicated it will do whatever is required to make this new calendar work. In the face of this crisis, football has shown its best side with openness, solidarity and tolerance.”
EURO 2020 was scheduled to take place in 12 cities across Europe from 12th June to 12th July 2020. The proposed new dates are from 11th June to 11th July 2021.
The European Championship has been postponed so UEFA will now work on finalising new dates for the Champions League and Europa League finals.

Copa America was scheduled to take place from 12th June to 12th July 2020. Colombia and Argentina were the host nations. But due to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19, football has been heavily affected.
CONMEBOL have now officially announced that they have postponed Copa America to 2021. Argentina and Colombia will hold the next year.
Debido a la evolución mundial del Coronavirus y con el objetivo de salvaguardar la salud del fútbol sudamericano, @CONMEBOL aplaza la celebración de la 47 edición de Copa América a las fechas del 11 de junio al 11 de julio de 2021
Copa America was scheduled to take place for the first time in two countries rather than one. It featured 12 teams for this edition, including invitees Australia and Qatar.
CONMEBOL said: “It’s an extraordinary measure due to an unexpected situation, and therefore responds to the fundamental need to avoid an exponential evolution of the virus.”
“We also thank UEFA and its president Aleksander Ceferin for working together and the co-ordinated decision to also postpone the 2020 Euros for the betterment of the whole football family.”
The tournament is now rescheduled to take place from 11th June to 11th July 2021. The decision was taken in conjunction with UEFA’s decision to postpone Euro 2020 to 2021.

There are a lot of us who own a PC, be it a gaming or a normal one, fighting the deadly Coronavirus is tough and we cannot do it alone. Science is doing its job of cutting through the progress of this global pandemic but it does not have enough resources to get through the workload so fast.
The project was announced by Folding@home a few days ago and has seen a boost of support from the PCMR community. This project aims to run on simulations on user’s computers, simulating potentially druggable protein targets from SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) and the related SARS-CoV virus.
Folding@home is a distributed computing project for disease research that simulates protein folding, computational drug design, and other types of molecular dynamics. The project has been active for nearly 2 decades, and its use has contributed to research applicable to Alzheimer’s, cancer and many viruses.
This initial wave of projects focuses on better understanding how these coronaviruses interact with the human ACE2 receptor required for viral entry into human host cells, and how researchers might be able to interfere with them through the design of new therapeutic antibodies or small molecules that might disrupt their interaction.

The lucky coach for ATK is positive about his stay at ATK and he creates history as Antonio Habas becomes the only manager to win two Indian Super League (ISL) titles after defeating Chennaiyin FC 3-1 in an audience-less summit clash on Saturday.
Even though ATK had an early lead from a beautiful cross from Roy Krishna and a great finish from Javi Hernandez, but the injury of Krishna created doubts of victory for ATK but ultimately both Edu Garcia and Javi did ensure the win over Chennaiyin. After the game, Habas did compare the feat to his previous achievement in Indian football.
“I think the match had two different parts. After the injury to Roy, we were nervous and we needed the personality to keep the scoreline intact. In the end, ATK scored three goals to one and we won.
“It’s (this title win) different because in the first season the ISL was not so competitive. Now it is more professional with better coaches and players, more time to the competition.
“I have to congratulate the players for their fantastic work throughout the season. We had a few problems with injuries with Carl McHugh and then Agus and Roy in the final today but the strength of the team was the collective.
“We had to move in the market after the injury of Carl McHugh. And after the problem to Agus, the team had some problems for two-to-three matches but the strength of the group saved the situation. I think the mix between the Indian and foreign players was fantastic. This is the secret to our success,” he said.
While Chennaiyin FC boss Owen Coyle believes his side played better in the final, even though ATK did not play good football in the second half but they did enough to seal the win, which is quite true to an extent.
“Today, in the second half we didn’t play well because we were afraid of losing our lead. It’s normal also, but we had fantastic behaviour. In some matches you can win while playing like this,” he explained.
“We had to create the atmosphere at the pitch. The attention and the motivation are different and you feel that you need something more but it’s very logical with the Coronavirus problem and you have to support this situation.”
Yesterday, ATK has created a new history in the Indian Super League and has clinched the ISL trophy for the third time defeating the underdogs Chennaiyin FC by 3-1 in Goa where the match was played in closed doors due to the coronavirus fears.
Though it was looking quite odd without any supporters, nevertheless, the league favourites ATK kept their composure and under the managerial role of their lucky coach Antonio Habas, ATK won the league in style.
The Kolkata franchise won their third league title in six years to become the most successful team in the competition, thanks to the likes of Roy Krishna, David Williams, Edu Garcia & Javi Hernandez, ATK did have dominating campaign overall.
Habas has been the key to the success of ATK and the wonderful performance from the Indian players like Arindam Bhattacharya, Pritam Kotal, Prabir Das, Pronay Halder, ATK has managed to win the league title without any difficulties.
ATK’s defence, as well as a strong attacking play, has impressed all of us, Roy Krishna grabbing 15 goals for them to help climb the league table. ATK defeated Sunil Chhetri’s Bengaluru FC to reach the final while Chennaiyin, who were looking to be weak at the start of the league, defeated another favourite FC Goa to find a spot in the finals.
Both ATK and Chennaiyin played well but ATK played smartly to convert the chances to goals while Owen Coyle’s side did miss some golden chances while made some great saves as well. The brace of Javi Hernandez and the important saves from Arindam Bhattacharya made the day for ATK.
ATK’s Sumit Rathi grabbed the ISL Emerging Player of the League while Roy Krishna missed the Golden Boot to Nerijus Valskis of Chennaiyin for his goal in the second half and Krishna missed the second half due to injury.
Antonio Habas has now become the first coach in the history of the competition to have won the league title twice while ATK becomes the only side to have won the ISL final each time they have managed to qualify. Kudos to all the hard work, well-deserved win ATK!!!
It was coming and we all knew that already major football leagues including LaLiga, Ligue 1, Seria A have been postponed for two weeks, UEFA too declared to close its matches until further notice, now the remaining two big football leagues had to follow.
The Premier League was supposed to be held closed-door but the situation has got even worse and finally, it has been called off until April 3 at the earliest.
After an emergency meeting on Friday, the decision has been taken that all forms of professional football in England be postponed until at least the beginning of next month.
The confirmed Coronavirus cases of Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi had contracted coronavirus, put the players into risk. The Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been forced into a period of self-isolation, along with a number of Leicester City players.
A statement from the FA read: “The FA, Premier League, EFL and FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship have collectively agreed to postpone the professional game in England until Friday 3 April at the earliest.
“This action, which will be kept under constant review, has been taken due to the increasing numbers of clubs taking steps to isolate their players and staff because of the Covid-19 virus.
“It will also apply to all England team fixtures at every level and all FA competitions including the Emirates FA Cup and the Women’s FA Cup, along with academy and youth-team matches.
“The decision is being made purely on the number of cases requiring self-isolation and the impact on facilities. Given the steps being taken across clubs, there is no alternative but for today’s action. However, all parties are committed at this time to trying to complete this season’s domestic fixture programme and are liaising to establish appropriate options to do so.”
On the other hand, the German football league Bundesliga has too been forced to call off all its matches to contain the spread of Covid-19. Like the Premier League, the German league was also supposed to be taking place behind closed doors this weekend but the DFL has, however, decided that they will join Serie A, Ligue 1, La Liga, the Premier League, Eredivisie and MLS in bringing fixture lists to an enforced close.
Bundesliga action will be postponed until April 2 and it will indeed be difficult for all league fixtures to get completed before the next season and if the situations get worse then the leagues might get called off actually.
A statement released by DFL read: “In light of today’s developments regarding the coronavirus and suspected cases in direct connection with the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, the Presidium of the DFL Deutsche Fussball Liga has decided at short notice to postpone the 26th matchday for both leagues.
“In addition, the committee recommends, as planned, that the general assembly of the professional clubs, which will meet next Monday, continue to suspend play until April 2.
“One of the reasons for this is that, during the day, there were suspicions of coronavirus infections in the vicinity of several clubs and their teams and that further infections cannot be ruled out. Previously, 2. Bundesliga team Hannover 96 prescribed home quarantine for the entire team on advice from the local health authorities.
“In the international break between all clubs, taking into account the knowledge currently available – for example with regard to the international match calendar – the course of action should remain unchanged. The goal is still to end the season by summer – from a sporting point of view, but especially because an early end to the season could have additional consequences for some clubs.”
Coronavirus is taking lives and spreading faster than ever, so we request to follow the guidelines and STAY SAFE!!!
