Copa America was scheduled to take place from 12th June to 12th July 2020. Colombia and Argentina were the host nations. But due to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19, football has been heavily affected.

CONMEBOL have now officially announced that they have postponed Copa America to 2021. Argentina and Colombia will hold the next year.

Debido a la evolución mundial del Coronavirus y con el objetivo de salvaguardar la salud del fútbol sudamericano, @CONMEBOL aplaza la celebración de la 47 edición de Copa América a las fechas del 11 de junio al 11 de julio de 2021

Copa America was scheduled to take place for the first time in two countries rather than one. It featured 12 teams for this edition, including invitees Australia and Qatar.

CONMEBOL said: “It’s an extraordinary measure due to an unexpected situation, and therefore responds to the fundamental need to avoid an exponential evolution of the virus.”

“We also thank UEFA and its president Aleksander Ceferin for working together and the co-ordinated decision to also postpone the 2020 Euros for the betterment of the whole football family.”

The tournament is now rescheduled to take place from 11th June to 11th July 2021. The decision was taken in conjunction with UEFA’s decision to postpone Euro 2020 to 2021.

These decisions would now give all the football leagues enough time to finish their season, which have been suspended due to COVID-19.
