Juventus have finally signed Matthijs De Ligt from Ajax

Juventus have won the race to sign Ajax skipper Matthijs de Ligt for around €85.5m ahead of Barcelona and PSG.

Juventus have confirmed that they have signed the much-coveted Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax for an initial €75m on a five-year contract. They will pay a further €10.5m in add-ons. Agent Mino Raiola has also received €10m for his part in the deal.

De Ligt’s five-year contract is worth up to €12m-a-year and possesses a €150m release clause, which should become active in the year 2022. De Ligt, a powerful, commanding and technically gifted center-back, rose to the limelight during the last season with Ajax reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, as well as claiming a domestic double under coach Erik ten Hag. But he now faces a task of justifying a fee of €85.5m, that makes him the most expensive under-20 defender of all time.

Matthijs de Ligt arrived at Ajax at the age of nine. He played in the Europa League final at the age of 17. Now he is 19-years-old and has already captained them to a domestic double and a Champions League semi-final last season.
Ajax paid a stunning tribute to their homegrown boy: “Hello as a little boy, GoldenBye as a captain.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala, Moise Kean and Juventus’ wingers are capable of breaking through any defences, especially in Serie A. Along with all the stalwarts of Juventus, they now have De Ligt who is an aerial ace capable of climbing above any pack. The 19-year-old scored seven goals for Ajax last season: three in the Eredivisie, one against rivals Feyenoord in the KNVB Beker, and a further three in the Champions League. Six of those goals were headed, including the towering effort which knocked Juventus out of Europe while he also nodded in an equaliser for Netherlands in their Nations League victory over England in the semi-final.

De Ligt and Ronaldo

Juventus have brought in a worthy heir to club icon Giorgio Chiellini, who will be celebrating his 35th birthday in August. Sarri’s biggest decision will revolve around his centre-back choices. Having worked with Daniele Rugani at Empoli, he might see more action and De Ligt can surely expect to feature regularly. An end to the Chiellini-Bonucci dynasty might not be far away.

De Ligt will now travel with his new teammates to Asia, where they will take part in this year’s International Champions Cup.

Atletico Madrid have signed Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier

Kieran Trippier is now an Atletico Madrid player.

Kieran Trippier has now replaced long-time Atletico Madrid right-back Juanfran, who left the club at the end of the season. The LaLiga side have confirmed via their official Twitter account that the defender has joined from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth around €22m.

The England full-back, who made 114 appearances through a four-season stint at the north London club after arriving from Burnley, has signed a three-year contract at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Trippier had been one of the most impressive performers as England finished fourth at the World Cup in Russia last summer, scoring early in the semi-final defeat to Croatia in Moscow, but endured a difficult season last time out as his form dipped. That culminated in him missing out on selection for the Nations League campaign in Portugal last month, with Trent Alexander-Arnold having now usurped him in the pecking order.

Kieran Trippier

The 28-year-old had admitted towards the end of last season that his future at Tottenham was in doubt, with Mauricio Pochettino intent upon reshaping his squad for what he has called the “next chapter” of the team’s development.

Atletico Madrid said in a statement on their website: “With this signing, we add to our team a fantastic and experienced player who comes to us from the Champions League runners-up. The Englishman is a versatile full-back who can also play in midfield and has a fantastic right foot.
Because of all this, we welcome Trippier to the Atleti Family and wish him the best of luck at his new home.”

Kieran Trippier

Trippier becomes the first Englishman to play for Atletico Madrid in nearly 100 years. The Manchester City academy graduate joins the centre-half Felipe, secured from Porto and left-back Renan Lodi, previously with Athletico Paranaense. The Spanish club have also secured Joao Felix from Benfica and Marcos Llorente from Real Madrid while selling Antoine Griezmann to the LaLiga champions Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid have challenged Barcelona’s signing of Antoine Griezmann

Barcelona have officially confirmed the signing of Antoine Griezmann but Atletico Madrid are claiming that Barcelona owe them more money.

Last summer, Antoine Griezmann refused to sign for Barcelona and remained in Atletico Madrid. But this summer is totally different. The World Cup winner has signed a five-year contract at Camp Nou containing an €800m release clause. His lawyers arrived at the LaLiga offices in Madrid to pay his Atletico Madrid release clause on Friday.

But now, Atletico Madrid are challenging Antoine Griezmann’s transfer to Barcelona as they insist the Catalans should have paid €200million to activate his release clause, not €120m. They believe the France international agreed terms with Barcelona before his release clause dropped from €200m on 1st July. Therefore they claim that Barcelona owe them an additional €80m to ratify the transfer.

Griezmann

Atletico Madrid published an official statement after Barcelona confirmed the signing of Antoine Griezmann: “The amount deposited is insufficient to meet his release clause since it is obvious that the agreement of the player and Barcelona was closed before the aforementioned clause was reduced from 200million euros to 120million euros. It was also prior to the date on which the clause was modified that the player made the communication, on May 14, that he will leave the club.
Atletico Madrid believes the termination of the contract occurred before the end of last season due to events, acts and demonstrations carried out by the player and that is why it [the club] has already started procedures it considers appropriate for the defence of its rights and legitimate interests.”

Barcelona are yet to respond to Atletico Madrid’s claims. Though they plan to unveil Griezmann at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

Barcelona Complete Signing Of Antoine Griezmann For €120 Million

Barcelona has paid the €120 million (£108 million) buyout clause to release Griezmann from his Atletico Madrid contract. He’s put pen to paper on a five-year deal, through to 30 June 2024 with a buyout clause of €800 million.

The 28-year-old turned down a move to Barca in June last year as he opted to extend his Atletico contract. However, Griezmann informed the Madrid side of his desire to leave the Spanish capital following five years.

Griezmann becomes the world’s sixth most expensive transfer behind Ousmane Dembele, Joao Felix, Kylian Mbappe, Philippe Coutinho and Neymar.

He has enjoyed his five seasons at Atletico Madrid following his move from Real Sociedad in 2014. He scored 133 goals in all competitions during his prolific spell in the Spanish capital, where he won the Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup.

The 28-year-old becomes the club’s fourth signing of the summer after Emerson, Frenkie de Jong and Neto. They remain in the market for another attacker with Neymar heavily linked with a sensational return to Catalunya.

Image: PA

Ernesto Valverde now boasts a wealth of attacking options in the shape of club captain Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Malcom and of course, Griezmann.

Barcelona are expected to present Griezmann at the Camp Nou next week, with the club set to announce official details of his presentation in due course.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid already have signed the replacement for their departing Frenchman in the form of Joao Felix. The Portugal international was brought in from SL Benfica earlier this month for a fee of €126 Million.

World Cup semifinal – India vs New Zealand: The tactical blunders and the controversies

India lost to New Zealand by 18 runs in a low scoring thriller. See what Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Kevin Pietersen has to say about the match!

The rain has played spoilsport in many matches in this World Cup in England. The semi-final match between India and New Zealand was no different. India bowled brilliantly to reduce New Zealand to 211/5 in 46.1 overs before the rain arrived in the first semifinal at Old Trafford Stadium, in Manchester. After hours of deliberation and covers coming on and off a number of times, as per the playing conditions, the match went into the reserve day, that is Wednesday (10th July) with New Zealand starting from where they left on 211/5. Ravindra Jadeja produced some brilliant fielding to restrict New Zealand to 239/8.

Kohli

What followed after that was a top notch bowling display from Matt Henry and Trent Boult to sent the famous top order of the Indian batting line up back to the pavilion. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli scored 1 each before going back to the pavilion. Rishabh Pant somewhat took charge of India’s proceedings. He played with maturity and patience. But got out because of his trademark poor shot selection. The young left-hander decided to slog sweep Mitchell Santner but ended up handing an easy catch to Colin de Grandhomme at deep mid-wicket.

The tactical blunder

Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik were sent ahead of Dhoni after India were reduced to five for three and then 24 for four.

VVS Laxman said: “Dhoni should have come ahead of Pandya. It was a tactical blunder. Dhoni should have walked ahead of Dinesh Karthik. The stage was set for Dhoni. In 2011 final also, he promoted himself up to bat at number four ahead of Yuvraj Singh and won the World Cup.
The one criticism (for selectors) is that they fiddled around the middle order. You can’t always depend on Rohit and Virat.”

Dhoni and Jadeja

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that it’s not just about Dhoni’s batting but also his calming influence on the young batsmen at the other end. He told Star Sports: “India needed experience at that stage. If Dhoni was there when Pant was batting, he would not have allowed Pant to play that shot against the breeze. In England, it’s a big factor. He would have told him to go after pacer when mid-off and mid-on are up because he is good at that.
Dhoni should have batted up. You need that composure and not just his batting. He would not have allowed wickets to fall in cluster. Dhoni was there when Jadeja batted. Communication is strength. You can’t have Dhoni at number seven.
As a finisher, he still has tremendous respect. He can still clear the field and that’s why he left it for last. It’s not that he can’t hit sixes but he thinks that’s the way to win ODI matches.”

The iconic Sachin Tendulkar, too, felt it was a mistake to not send Dhoni up the order. He said: “The question here can be, in a crunch moment like this, would you not think of promoting Dhoni with experience on his back? Towards the end, he kept talking to (Ravindra) Jadeja and he was controlling things. Maybe instead of Hardik, Dhoni should have come up. Batting Dinesh Karthik at number 5 was slightly out of the box I felt.”

Dhoni

Ganguly further said the biggest mistake the Indian selectors made in the last one and a half year was not finding a solid middle order. He said: “What India need to do is to push Rishabh Pant to number five. Kohli can bat at number four if KL Rahul is a solution at number three when Shikhar Dhawan comes back. India will have to identify the middle order batsmen and persist with them.
That’s the only mistake selectors made. You can’t depend on Jadeja (to win matches by leaving it for lower order).”

The controversy

MS Dhoni’s dismissal was the turning point of the match. Dhoni got run out when he was about to change the gear with India needing 25 runs off the 10 deliveries at Old Trafford. Livid fans, however, blamed an umpiring error for his dismissal and questioned New Zealand’s field placement. MS Dhoni was at the crease with ample expectations from Indian fans. Dhoni had done such jobs many times before and he had plans to execute this one too. The 49th over was on with Lockie Ferguson bowling.
India fans shared videos and pictures of television screens just before that very ball on which Dhoni was dismissed. It showed that there were six New Zealand fielders outside the inner circle while only five fielders are allowed.

The run out would have been given even if umpires had called the no-ball but people claimed Dhoni’s approach would have been different if he had known that it was a no-ball. The enraged fans came down heavily on umpires and New Zealand team using unethical ways to win games.
After the dismissal, India’s World Cup dreams ended as they were bowled out for 221 in 49.3 overs.
