Gianluigi Buffon is set to make a surprise return to Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon is heading back to his former club Juventus, where he played for 17 years.

Gianluigi Buffon joined Juventus from Parma for a then-world record fee of €52 million in 2001. He spent 17 years at Juventus. He has won nine Serie A titles, five Supercoppa Italiana titles and four Coppa Italia titles with Juventus, while he was a Champions League runner-up on three occasions. He had won seven Serie A in a row between 2012 and 2019, making 656 appearances for Juventus in total.

But last summer, Buffon made a shock move to PSG. In his 1 year at PSG he has won the Ligue 1 and Trophee des Champions. Two weeks ago, he has now revealed that after just one season at Paris Saint-Germain he was leaving for a new adventure.

There had been rumours that the veteran shot-stopper could potentially be going to Leeds or Porto. But Sky Sports Italia revealed that Buffon will return to the Old Lady to continue as a player.

Buffon

Buffon’s agent Silvano Martina told Sport Mediaset: “It would be nice if this eventuality materialised. It may be that the Bianconeri thought of him in case [Mattia] Perin left. He’s 41 years old, but he’s still looking good. He likes to play football, he still wants to make himself available and test himself. If such an opportunity arose, he’d certainly appreciate it.
It’d be nice if the deal went through, but the belly must grow before it gives birth to the baby.”

There were rumours that Buffon is holding out for wages that would put him on par with big-earning forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Martina rebuffed all the rumours by saying: “I’ve heard [reports] that Gigi will be the squad’s highest-paid player after Ronaldo. That’s nonsense.”

Buffon

Buffon’s deal will be for one season, but he will be expected to take on another role at the club when he retires. The transfer is likely to be completed once Juventus move on their current back-up Mattia Perin, who has interest from Roma and Sevilla. The veteran stopper held Juventus’ No. 1 jersey for the entirety of his first stint but would be expected to serve as understudy to Wojciech Szczesny after he makes the return.

Gianluigi Buffon is one of the best goalkeepers of world football. He has won every title on country and club level, just the Champions League trophy has eluded him ever since. With Cristiano Ronaldo in their team, it may be Buffon’s best chance to get his hands on the Champions League trophy with Juventus.
