Tajinderpal Singh Toor clinched the men’s shot put gold with a record-shattering throw. He opened India’s medal account in athletics at the 18th Asian Games.
It was not easy to leave behind his father, battling cancer in a Punjab hospital. But Tajinderpal Singh Toor remained strong in pursuit of his passion. And all the sacrifices made, paid off on Saturday with an Asian Games gold medal in shot put.
Not only the 23-year-old from Moga won a gold, it came with a new Games record. He threw the iron ball to 20.75 m in his fifth attempt. It bettered a six-year old mark, set by Om Prakash Karhana (20.69m). Tajinderpal said he did not think of winning gold and his target was to breach the 21m mark. China’s Liu Yang took the silver with a best throw of 19.52 m while Ivan Ivanov of Kazakhstan won the bronze with 19.40 m.
“I had just one aim in mind. I wanted to clear 21 metre and did not think of gold. But I am happy with this. I was trying hard to break the national record for the last 2-3 years and it happened today, that too with a Meet record. ” Tajinderpal said after winning gold.
Tajinderpal said the feat means a lot to him and his family. “This medal is my biggest achievement because a lot of sacrifices have been made. For the last two years, my father (Karam Singh) has been battling with cancer. My family though never let me get distracted. They allowed me to chase my dream. A lot of sacrifices have been made by my family and friends and all those have paid today. My family never pressurized to attend my father in hospital. And it was always my friends who took care of all the hospital formalities in my absence. I have not gone home much in this period since I was training in Dharamsala. ” the burly athlete, who trains with MS Dhillon, said.
“Now I will meet my dad but I will be there for only two days. I have to get ready for the next challenge. My coach M S Dhillon also needs to be credited for the hard work put in by him,” Tajinderpal added.

Barcelona shut the door on Ivan Rakitic transfer amid PSG interest. They are not contemplating the sale of Ivan Rakitic to Paris Saint-Germain.
Barcelona midfielder Rakitic has emerged as a shock target for PSG. PSG are plotting a Champions League glory under new boss Thomas Tuchel. The French champions are interested in the 30-year-old Croatian. They look to add a third top-class central midfielder to their ranks to complement Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot.
Ivan Rakitic is one of Barcelona’s best players. He should not be allowed to leave, according to head coach Ernesto Valverde. Rakitic signed a new contract with Barcelona just last year. And he is under contract until 2021, with a release clause of €125 million.
Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly lining up an €90 million bid for the 30-year-old midfielder. Rakitic’s demands have risen as he was part of the Croatia side that reached the World Cup final. But according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s chief Josep Maria Bartomeu told the Ligue 1 giants that Rakitic will only be able to leave if they meet his release clause.
Relations between the two clubs are still strained given what unfolded a year ago. Barcelona were hellbent on signing Marco Verratti. They were convinced that he could be their long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta. But PSG, fuming at their approach, then triggered Neymar’s £200m release clause to bring him to France.
Meanwhile, speaking yesterday, Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde opened up on Rakitic’s future. He said: “He is a fundamental player for us and I am counting on him due to what he does for us, the importance he had for the team last season was clear. Look at his statistics. We all know what he does for the team but just as we analyse players from other teams, other teams analyse our players. But I hope he stays here, there is no doubt about that.”

The smartphones in the market at that price range have Snapdragon 845 in them.

According to El Pais, Julen Lopetegui’s side are thinking about recalling James Rodriguez from Bayern Munich.
James Rodriguez agreed a two-year loan switch to the German club, Bayern Munich last summer. The 27-year-old grew frustrated at the lack of first team football in Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane.
The Colombian enjoyed a productive 2017/18 campaign at the Allianz Arena. He netted eight goals and provided 14 assists in 39 appearances. James Rodriguez won Bayern Munich’s sixth Bundesliga title in a row.
However, Marca claims the player is wanted by new Los Blancos boss Julen Lopetegui and talks are ongoing with Bayern Munich about bringing James Rodriguez back. Rodriguez is currently contracted at Real Madrid until 2021. An emotional return could be on the cards now that Zidane is no longer in charge.
The no.10 admitted he would be open to a move back to the Bernabeu when he faced them with Bayern in the Champions League in April. “Return to Madrid? I don’t know, nobody knows what will happen in the future but currently I am with Bayern. I’m in a good phase of form at the minute and I am good here, I am happy. ” James Rodriguez said.
El Pais says Real Madrid hierarchy will discuss whether paying £35million for their own player to break the loan agreement is worthwhile. But the Bernabeu crowd loves James. And after Ronaldo’s departure he can be a valuable addition to the squad.
