SERIE A 2020-21 SEASON PREVIEW: Will AS Roma push for the Champions League?

From playing regularly in the Champions League to being an outsider for the Top 4, things have clearly changed for AS Roma. Dependent on key personnel to deliver the results, they look a former shadow of a challenger with grit and passion. It seems to be a similar season with focus lying on the Europa League and Coppa Italia. But can they make enough efforts to achieve their league objectives?

Transfer Activity

Roma managed to sign Veretout and Mancini on permanent deals while securing Carles Perez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pedro as free transfers. They are also looking to finalize a move for Chris Smalling. But on the flip side, they have lost both starting full-backs in Kolarov and Florenzi. So it is safe to say that Roma needs to sign quality defenders, and sooner rather than later.

Strength

Paulo Fonseca’s men managed to score 77 goals in the league last season. Undoubtedly, star striker Edin Dzeko has been at the forefront for most good things and acted as the perfect target man to the crosses from Kolarov, Florenzi and Pellegrini. The midfield three of Veretout, Diawara and Pellegrini also looks very composed, with each one having a good understanding of their roles.

Weakness

The defence was the weakest among the Top 6 clubs, conceding 51 goals in the 38 league games. It is set to be further weaker if Roma do not sign quality full-backs to replace the voids left behind by Kolarov and Florenzi. Another huge blow to Roma is the loss of Zaniolo to cruciate ligament injury. The Italian attacking midfielder had a stellar breakout season, scoring 6 goals and providing 2 assists.

If he does not move to Juventus as is the latest transfer speculation, then it is once again set to be Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian striker at the ripe age of 32, is showing no signs of slowing down. A proven match-winner and a nightmare for opposition defenders to deal with, Fonseca will be hoping Dzeko once again leads the team to victories and successful results.

Predicted Table Finish

7th Place: Roma have had flickers of good things coming together for them, but the league demands consistency which they have not delivered. With players not yet fully adapting to Fonseca’s system, there are also questions on the defensive ability of the team.

The transfer window before the start of the 2020-21 campaign is open and there have already been many big signings.

Among the top five European leagues, Premier League has been the most active in the transfer market and LaLiga has almost no new major signings.

A weird LaLiga rule has come to light now, which is causing problems for the top Spanish clubs to sign new players.

Transfer journalist, Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “If Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Barça are not signing any top player on this summer is because of La Liga rules. ‘You’ve to sell players then you can buy again’.”

The prime example of this rule’s victim is Barcelona-Memphis Depay transfer deal. The Netherlands striker has already agreed on personal terms with Barcelona and Olympique Lyonnais are also ready to accept their offer but Barcelona can’t sign the striker unless another striker goes out, in this case, we’re talking about Luis Suarez.

Ronald Koeman doesn’t have Suarez in his plans for this season and Juventus are interested in signing the Uruguayan. But Suarez wants to stay at Camp Nou and this is the thing which is making the Depay signing complicated.

According to the LaLiga rule, if Suarez or any other forward doesn’t go out, Barcelona can’t sign another forward.

This has been a weird rule by LaLiga and you can definitely see its impact on the top clubs in Spain. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid don’t have any new signings while Barcelona has only a swap deal of Arthur-Pjanic completed with Juventus.

LaLiga needs to rethink this rule or else they will fall behind other European leagues.

The Cupertino giant today is supposed to launch a variety of products including iPad Air 4, iPad 8th Gen, Apple Watch Series 6, and the budget Apple Watch SE. When we are all hoping for an iPhone 12 series event in October, this iPhone SE Plus 2020 comes up from nowhere and this could be a major surprise today from Apple.

As nothing more is specified on the product page of the screen protector, what we can really expect is a revamped iPhone SE with a larger display and a notch in an iPhone 8 Plus chassis. Hopefully, in a couple of hours this new iPhone will eventually be revealed, get ready guys!!!

Redmi 9i officially launched in India starting at Rs. 8,299

Redmi 9i has been launched officially in India. The phone is an entry-level smartphone in the 9 series smartphones of Redmi and features a notched display, decent battery, single rear camera, and many more specifications.

It runs on the Android v10 (Q) operating system (support of MIUI) and the phone is powered by an Octa-core, 2 GHz, Cortex A53 processor, that runs on the MediaTek Helio G25 Chipset.

The new Redmi smartphone offers two different RAM and storage configurations and based on these criteria the company has set the price of this phone – Rs. 8,299 for 4GB RAM+ 64GB storage variant and Rs. 9,299 for 4GB RAM + 128GB internal storage.

Regarding the display, this phone sports a 6.53″ (720 x 1600 Pixels) IPS LCD display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, a contrast ratio of 1,500:1, and a 270 nits peak brightness. It will be a waterdrop notch display.

Now, coming to the cameras, this phone features a single rear camera of 13-megapixel (f/2.2). This primary sensor will have facilities like Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Face detection, Touch to focus. The phone also has a water drop shaped notch on the display to hold a 5 megapixels selfie camera with an f/2.2 lens.

The phone has internal storage up to 128GB, which can be expanded via a MicroSD card. Regarding the battery, this phone is backed up by a 5,000mAH battery, which is supported by 10W of fast charging technology.

Onboard sensors of this phone include a gyro sensor, a proximity sensor, an e-compass, and an ambient light sensor.

Xiaomi will offer three different variants for this phone – Midnight Black, Sea Blue, and Nature Green. The phone will go on sale starting September 18th at 12 noon. Willing people can buy it from Flipkart, Mi.com, Mi Home Stores, and also from Xiaomi partner offline retailers.

In a previous article, we acclaimed that OnePlus may be launching its flagship model OnePlus 8T at the end of 2020, now surprisingly, this flagship model is collecting some certifications (like BIS, Greekbench, etc). We have got some leaked features and snapshots of these certificates of this upcoming handset from a Twitter post of Abhishek Yadav.

OnePlus has followed a trend to launch dual-flagship in a year over the last four years, to maintain this tradition they will do the same this year with the OnePlus 8T. The phone comes with a quad-rear back camera and on the front side, a hole-punch cutout that holds the selfie camera. According to the renders, the OnePlus 8T may switch to a flat panel.

While if you go by the Geekbench datasheet, the OnePlus 8T (OnePlus KB2001) will be powered by the older Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Chipset, and unsurprisingly the OnePlus 8T will run in OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11 and the CPU clocked at 1.80GHz. The phone will come with 8GB of RAM configuration with the support of 128GB of internal storage capacity.

The motherboard of this phone has a codename of “Kona”. The OnePlus 8T scores 912 in a single score test, and 3288 in the multi-core test.

According to the renders of OnePlus 8T, the phone will be launched with a 6.55″ AMOLED display with 120Hz of refresh rate.

Now to enlighten the camera of this device, the phone features a triple camera sensor setup, including a 64MP primary snapper joined by a 16MP wide-angle sensor, and an 8MP telephoto sensor. On the front of the phone has a punch-hole cutout at the top left corner to hold the selfie camera with a 20MP lens.

However, the rumor claims, that the main camera sensor of the OnePlus 8T will employ a newer imaging sensor than its predecessor that will improve the picture quality. The battery of the OnePlus 8T will be supported by 65W fast charging but the battery capacity is not known to yet.

Besides the OnePlus 8T, BIS also certified the OnePlus Watch and as well as the PowerBank. The OnePlus watch popped up on the internet as the watch received IMDA certifications and as well as the Indian BIS certifications and the PowerBank has also been surfaced on the BIS certification website – which hints that these devices might soon launch India as well. But we haven’t got any specifications for these devices till.

It is expected that OnePlus will launch its flagship handset and the other devices soon, however, we will provide you all the upcoming updates.

Dream11 is making big strides in the market this year. The fantasy sports platform first made a huge breakthrough by becoming the title sponsors of the IPL 2020.

They then became co-presenting partners of on-air broadcast and took many team sponsorships. It has also been reported now that Dream11 will also be the co-presenting partner of Disney+ Hotstar for the LIVE streaming of IPL 2020.

Other than this Hotstar has also signed deals with Procter & Gamble, Kellogs, Himalaya, Apple, Intel, JSW, Ikea, Jeep, Urban Company, JBL, Visa, Mastercard, and CarDekho among others for the advertising around the LIVE streaming of IPL 2020.

According to the reports, the platform has got 11 associate sponsors including Acko General Insurance, Maruti Suzuki, digital ledger app Khata-Book, e-commerce firm Flipkart, online food ordering platform Swiggy, online rummy gaming platform Ace23, HDFC Bank, Great Learning, MX Player, Kingfisher Calendar, and Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

Dream11 was started by Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth in 2008. In just over a decade, it has turned not only the biggest mobile gaming platforms in the country but has also emerged as one of the biggest cricket advertisers in the world. It also became the highest overall spender of the IPL 2020.

The company’s total investment in the league is set to cross the whooping figure of 500 crores. They first bought title sponsorship of the league for 222 crores. Their commitment as a co-presenting partner with IPL live broadcast will be another 120-130 crores. They have also confirmed sponsorship deals with six franchises of IPL 2020. All put together, the figure is expected to touch 500 crores.

This just goes to show the hold of Dream11 on the market that they’re able to produce such massive revenues in such a difficult time of the pandemic.

Against all the odds, Atalanta had a successful 2019-20 season. They reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, in addition to securing 3rd place in the league. Gian Gasperini’s men have played a fluidic system and with a few signings in the transfer market, they have given the big boys a run for their money. So the only real question is, are Atalanta a one-season wonder or can they continue to deliver the goods?

Transfer activity

Atalanta have so far signed Aleksey Miranchuk and Mario Pasalic, who are expected to strengthen the midfield. Simone Muratore, Cristian Romero and Cristiano Piccini will look to provide cover in defence. They have also signed Anwar Mediero from Barcelona. He is a prospect for the future, though he will be immediately available to Gasperini for the first-team.

They, however, did lose Timothy Castagne to Leicester City but for Atalanta, that is what has fuelled their transfer business so far. Latest speculation remains on whether they will be signing a striker, depending on Josep Ilicic’s future.

Strength

Atalanta’s biggest strength has no doubt, been their tactical organisation. The fact that Gasperini was able to do so much more with so less resources speaks for itself. The team from Bergamo scored 96 goals in 38 league games while playing with attacking full-backs and mobile central midfielders. They were also the 4th best defence, conceding 48 goals. So all in all, the players keeping their faith in the system and making it work has got to be the greatest positive.

Weakness

Atalanta much like so many small teams has relied on their core set of players to get the job done. In attack, it has been Papu Gomez and Zapata. In midfield, it has been Pasalic and De Roon. In defence, it has been Toloi, Hateboer and Gosens. So, if these players were to suffer fatigue and injuries, there is not enough quality cover to provide the same impact that these names do.

Ageing like fine wine, captain Papu Gomez is the one to watch out for. A model citizen who leads by example, Papu Gomez scored 7 goals and 16 assists in 38 games last season. With the knowledge and ability to play anywhere across the frontline, he will look to get into the tight spaces and unlock defence with his quick movement and one-touch passing.

Predicted table finish

5th Place: Despite landing the fairytale story every club dreams of and having positives, there is a level of doubt on whether the club can achieve the same objective. A sense of isolation will set in, but Atalanta are definitely going to be playing like a club with nothing to lose.
