Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 vs Huawei Kirin 9000: Who is the better performer?

0

The launch of Snapdragon 888 has already attracted a lot of eyes since its launch this earlier this week. Many companies like Realme, Lenovo, Meizu, Nubia has already announced that their upcoming products will be having Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 SoC.

With this pattern, we understand that most smartphones, especially the Chinese mobiles, in 2021 will have this 5nm processor. Another chipset that has made its way into the market recently is Huawei’s Kirin 9000. Here, we compare the two chipsets.

GPU

Both the companies have bettered their GPU’s performance with their new chips. Qualcomm’s Adreno 660 boasts to give a 35% increase in performance over the previous generation but Huawei’s Kirin 9000 goes one notch ahead and claims to give a 52% increase in performance over Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865. According to the reports, Snapdragon 888 scored 4286 points in the GPU benchmark app. Whereas, Kirin 9000 scored much more; 6261 points.

CPU

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 wins this category by a few margins. Kirin 900’s prime core and three other performance cores are Cortex-A77 cores. This is the same which was used in Snapdragon 865. Snapdragon 888 took a step ahead and adopted Cortex-X1 in the prime core.

Its performance cores have three Cortex-A78 cores. Cortex-A78 and Cortex-X1 offer 20% and 30improvement in performance over the previously adopted Cortex-A77. Thus, the performance tasks will be done much better by Snapdragon 888. But when it comes to efficiency, Kirin 900 will be faster due to the cores’ higher clock speed.

AI

The Snapdragon 888 claims to have up to 26 TOPS in performance with the new Hexagon 780 AI Engine’s aid. The Kirin 9000 is at the apex of the AI benchmark table. It has a strong and robust tri-core NPU with a Dual Big Core and a Tiny Core.

Intel to outsource its Atom and Xeon production to TSMC

0

With the changes brought forth in the semiconductor market due to the increasing demand for high-performing devices, Intel couldn’t sit quietly and do nothing for its silicon market. A recent job description on the company’s official website has revealed that it will be outsourcing its production to the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. We already know that intel was planning to make the shift for a long time. But the new job listing reveals that Intel will be shifting its Atom and Xeon processors over to the world’s largest contract chipmaker.

The job description states that “As a member of the QAT design team, you will work as the RTL integration lead within the Custom Logic ASIC Engineering group in DCG [Data Center Group]. You will play a key role in developing and integrating QAT into Atom & Xeon based SoC on Intel and TSMC process. You will work with the IP/SoC integration team and collaborate with the SoC design, validation, and emulation teams to ensure successful integration validation of the QAT IP.”

According to sources, Intel only currently produces special variants of its Atom and Xeon based processors. The company earlier unveiled its Atm’ Snow Ridge’ SoC with up to 24 Tremont cores for 5G base stations. But according to reports, the Xeon platform utilizes high-performance cores and is sold at premium prices, so it might not be advantageous for intel to outsource it to TSMC.

But the company might be doing it coup with its own fab cost. Intel’s Atom processors are not cheap to make and thus utilizes a more complex process. Thus for the company to focus on its other models, it looks like a decent strategy to outsource its complex Atom and Xeon processors to TSMC.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS seemingly confirmed on upcoming ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

0

As December comes into play, we are getting a series of leak about the upcoming Ryzen 5000H gaming processors launching next month. Its been few hours since I wrote about the upcoming Ryzen 9 5900HX, which has also been found on an ASUS gaming laptop and will be the first overclockable CPU on a laptop.

Now, it turns out, upcoming ASUS laptops have been totally leaked by @momomo_us, and the last year’s flagship laptop will be treated quite well by the Taiwan giant. The much loved ROG Zephyrus G14 will be upgraded with a new 8 core, 16 threaded Ryzen 9 5900HS, which comes with 3.1GHz clock speed and 4.5GHz max turbo.

These are some minor improvements in clock speeds as now you have 100MHz more for the base clock speeds and a 200MHz increase in boost frequencies. Yes, as it’s based on Zen 3 architecture, it will have major improvements in single-core performance that helps in gaming and is somehow dependent on the cache redesign.

Also, the L3 cache has been upgraded to 16MB and as a whole, the gaming performance is already evident on the new Ryzen 5000 series processors, so expect similar kind of improvements although still being as efficient as last-gen.

The upcoming Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 has been spotted with 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 SDRAM, where one is upgradable, and the other is soldered. It is paired with a 1TB SSD, and I hope they provide faster SSDs than last-gen; well, you won’t have to wait much as CES 2021 seems fun and interesting!

GoPro reaches 40 Million Camera Sales this Festive Period

0

American technology company GoPro has posted sales on its website about the very successful Black Friday/Cyber Monday 2020 sales event. There were record-breaking sales and the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) also now increased the number of its subscribers to over 670,000. The latest festive season also helped the company reach an important milestone.

GoPro has announced that during this week (November 30-December 6, 2020), it has sold its 40 millionth camera since the launch of its first-ever HD action unit in 2009. The recent holiday sales event apparently aided the milestone number. GoPro’s founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, has also acknowledged its fans and customers worldwide in conquering this record number.

GoPro.com performed as we expected, handily breaking sales records over the Black Friday – Cyber Monday period, thus ensuring we’ll finish the year with well over 700,000 subscribers,” said Nicholas Woodman, according to SGB Media Online. “We are confident about our ability to exit 2020 with low channel inventory and a promising outlook for 2021.”

“On behalf of GoPro’s employees, past and present, I’d like to thank our customers around the world for helping us reach the milestone of 40 million cameras sold,” added Woodman. “We love what we do because you love what we make,” he added.

The GoPro HERO9 Black

Compared to about 500,000 subscribers in the past year, GoPro has increased significantly with 670,000 and shot past its earlier conservative target of 600,000 such customers by the end of this year. Now, the company is moving towards its projected upper limit of about 700,000 by 2021.

The recently-launched HERO9 Black, the new action-cam, has a few extraordinary advantages over its predecessor, including a front-facing color display, 5K recording, and a new 20MP sensor. This new action-cam has definitely helped them with their bumper sale this festive period, which is still active at the time of writing and includes a bundle with a 32GB microSD card, a magnetic swivel clip, a hand-grip, and 1 additional battery for US$350.

ISL 2020-21: East Bengal’s horror start continues with 3rd consecutive defeat

The newly introduced club are facing some serious difficulty in keeping up with the levels of the Hero ISL in their debut campaign. SC East Bengal succumbed to their third defeat in three matches played so far in the ISL with a 2-0 loss to NorthEast United.

East Bengal have conceded 7 goals in three games so far this season. That is the worst record in the division as they find themselves at the bottom of the table tonight. More concerning is the fact that they have not managed to score a single goal yet.

They have managed to put one in the back of their own net on the flipside. That is how the scoring opened against NorthEast with East Bengal conceding a shocking own goal to give their opponents the lead.

Jacques Maghoma was clipped inside the box in the early knockings of the match, and how the referee decided to not award a penalty to East Bengal is beyond us. NorthEast doubled their lead in the 90th minute from a swift counter-attack from the two substitutes.

Suhair Vadakkepeedika delivered a perfect cross towards the far post to Rochharzela, who made a 50-yard dash before finishing off the cross, unmarked.

What Has Gone Wrong for East Bengal?

If you look at the numbers themselves, East Bengal had most of the possession in tonight’s match. However, nothing productive came from the lion’s share of having the ball. Robbie Fowler’s team manage to keep the ball well along the half-line but tend to give it away very cheaply shortly after.

Their centre backs playing dangerously high also leaves the counter-attack ripe for the taking. Going forward, there seems to be a lack of direction overall. They mainly resort to crossing from wide areas, but often lack the decision making prowess to get the ball into the back of the net.

All of that can be mainly reasoned out as the lack of familiarity among the players and the inexperience for the team as a whole. It is worth keeping in mind that Robbie Fowler only had a month to assemble the squad from scratch. But, on that note, it is also worth noting that the 3-4-3 is not working out.

The head coach must find a way to experiment and get the best out of the players whilst also managing to increase the cohesion among the East Bengal players if they are to turn their fate around this season.

Bayern Munich confident of keeping talismanic midfield duo of Goretzka and Kimmich

0

Since moving to Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2018 for free, Leon Goretzka has managed to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the world. Not to mention the body transformation post market that made the German look almost Herculean in the process.

All things considered, Goretzka has been phenomenal in the heart of the park for Bayern, and the treble winning 19/20 season is testament to that.

Speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s “Here We Go” podcast, the Italian transfer guru welcomed BILD’s Christian Falk on episode 14. The duo discussed the possibility of Goretzka signing a contract extension at Bayern Munich in their 35 minute long chat.

Considering the upward spiral that Bayern have been on since Hansi Flick took over, it seems ever so likely that Goretzka will re-sign with the German giants.

Goretzka is German by birth, and the appeal of the Bavarians is much more to those who have been raised in Deutschland. Romano and Falk touched upon that very point in their discussion in episode 14.

They also mentioned that Goretzka isn’t performing as well without Kimmich by his side and that the player is aware of that. It’s these aspects of his game that Goretzka will have to improve upon to keep himself up for a challenge throughout his time at Bayern.

The treble winners will be looking to open talks with not only Goretzka, but the other half of their all-German midfield, Joshua Kimmich very soon as well.
