India can achieve ‘kotipakoti’ computing by 2025: Intel’s Raja Koduri

0

Ancient Indian mathematicians had visualised ‘Kotipakoti’ in the early texts as among the very big numbers. 21 ‘zeroes’ after ‘one’ (1000000000000000000000). In computer lingo, zettascale (One trillion Gigabytes) computing involves ‘kotipakoti’ computations that can provide amazing insights by culling through gigantic volumes of data in real-time.

In an interview with The Business Line, Raja Koduri, Senior Vice-President, Chief Architect and General Manager (Architecture, Graphics and Software) at Intel Corporation, said: “India can achieve it by 2025.”

When India gets there, it will be a “Kotipakoti Ganananka Atmanirbhar Bharat”, achieving self-reliance in computing capacity.

“India can get there. Do not bother just catching up to the cloud, in which India fell behind. Just jump to the next thing. When India missed the PC drive, it jumped to mobile, where it leads,” he added.

Higher Computational capacity

Koduri argued that India needs this kind of massive computing capacity to cash in on the voluminous data storage potential in the country, and in order to benefit from it in real-time, India needs its data to be handled in local centres.

He pointed out the challenges faced by the farmers. “There is so much uncertainty in terms of climatic conditions. There are issues related to insects, diseases, prediction of yields and marketing,” he said.

“Why is that the computation is only available to big companies? Why doesn’t the farmer have access to real time information? Why can’t they monitor and make adjustments to what they are doing on a real time basis?” he asked.

Huge computational capacities will also help get better results in handling the Covid-19 pandemic. He noted that the need for self-reliance in computing is as important as self-reliance in electricity and food.

Koduri said that the country needs a zettascale computing capacity — 1,021 floating-point operations and AI operations per second — to handle the voluminous data that 130 crore Indians generate every day.

Computing capacity, like any other technological necessitiy, should be accessible to every one. “Some people paint a very dark future, saying computers will take over the world and it will be scary. Whenever a new technology is created, it is used for both bad and good purposes. But eventually, good purposes takes over bad purposes,” he says.

Better overall infrastructure

To achieve massive computing capacities, Koduri said there needs to be a collaborative approach for data collection.

“We need to have multiple local datacentres where the data can be collected within a radius of 100 miles, so that you can collect the data in milliseconds. This will also help in addressing the issue of redundancy of data (same data stored, transferred across multiple devices). You don’t need to move the data across the country,” he said.

According to him, within the next five years, India will have supercomputers all across the country. Electrical infrastructure is a must as power failures are a dreaded nightmare within the computer industry.

Koduri feels the six pillars of a data centre are “chips, architecture, memory, switches and networking product line, security and the software that runs all of this stuff,” and he pointed out that Intel operates at all the levels that a basic data centre is configured to.

“Intel is one of the few companies where a country like India can just work with straight. We can be an exascale (1,018 floating-point operations per second) or zettascale data centre partner. You can get all forms from transistor to software, from one place, designed securely,” he concluded.

Apple removed 39,000 games including 46,000 apps from the China Store to meet the deadline

0

Apple removed a huge number of game apps from its China store on Thursday. The number is 39,000, which is the biggest removal ever in one day. All the game publishers were given a year-end deadline to obtain a license.

This unexpected takedown came because the Chinese authorities have overlooked the license policy of the games. Alongside the 39,000 games, Apple has also removed more than 46,000 number of apps from their store on Thursday. According to the research firm Qimai, some renowned titles have also been affected by the sweep, like NBA 2K20 and Assassin’s Creed Identity.

Among the top 1,500 paid games, only 74 of them have been able to survive on the Apple store, said Qimai. Initially, the deadline from Apple was given until the end of June but later it was extended to December 31. The government-issued license was for enabling users to make in-app purchases in the largest game market in the world.

It’s not new that China is not serious about the regulations on the license. But it was not clear why this year Apple was forcing them more strictly.

Todd Kuhns, the marketing manager of AppInChina (a firm that helps overseas companies to distribute their apps) said, “However, this major pivot to only accepting paid games that have a game licence, coupled with China’s extremely low number of foreign game licences approved this year, will probably lead more game developers to switch to an ad-supported model for their Chinese versions.”

Tesla will be delivering Model Y SUVs from its China Gigafactory this month

The electric car manufacturer is racing to deliver the vast number of orders it’s receiving from its ever-growing customers across the globe. In Asia, Tesla’s only operating Gigafactory is currently in Shanghai dubbed as the Gigafactory 3.

It has recently started manufacturing cars at full scale, and as the Reuters report, Tesla will start selling its Model Y electric SUV from its China plant. It also committed that deliveries of these cars will begin by the end of this month.

Tesla will be delivering Model Y SUVs from its China Gigafactory this month

Tesla’s most popular Model 3 has already been made at the Shanghai car factory, and in October it exported cars to Europe as well. China is the world’s largest car market, and as their government is supporting electric vehicles, Tesla is in a win-win situation despite the US-China trade war.

Tesla is also adding manufacturing capacity for EV chargers in Shanghai apart from expanding its sales and service network across the country. In November alone, it sold over 20,000 vehicles in China; this is a clear indication of Tesla’s popularity in Asia.

As per its China website, the starting price of a Model Y is now 339,900 yuan (or $52,091.95). Well, as the recent confirmation from the Indian government, Tesla is coming with its Model 3 in India this yeat, and most probably its export will be done from this China Gigafatory as well.

Latest Steam Survey shows anomally as Intel gains 7.91% share in a month

Steam’s latest hardware survey for December 2020 seems to be a bit confusing as it records AMD losing over 7% in just a month. The comparison of the survey home page doesn’t seem real.

It makes no sense that in a single month Intel growing to 81% and AMD falling to 19%. A 1-2% max is generally recorded each month, however, in this case, its a whopping 7.91%.

Latest Steam Survey shows anomally as Intel gains 7.91% share in a month
Latest Steam Survey shows anomally as Intel gains 7.91% share in a month

This is unusual as the momentum for the last couple of months has been on AMD’s side and with Ryzen 5000 series, the scenario couldn’t be what Steam is suggesting. Now, when the chart is expanded, we see Intel gaining only 2.18% share with Windows while AMD gained only 0.37% on Linux.

Still, the figures do not add up as almost 8% gain in a month is absolutely bizarre. AMD has been gaining each month and even November’s data showed that too. Obviously, this seems to be an issue with the reading and Steam should fix this in the coming days.

Top 5 things that might happen in gaming in 2021

0

2021 seems to be an exciting year with the recently launched next-gen consoles Xbox Series X|S and PS5. We can expect some fantastic games this year, for these high-end consoles. Regarding all these consoles and with the up-coming games this year is going to be a sensational one, from this point the next phase of gaming could appear. So, we are here with the top 5 gaming predictions for 2021.

Release of Halo Infinite

After a long wait for the development, it seems that Halo Infinite is going to release in 2021. 343 Industries is preparing for a long time for this game to come back with a bang, after struggling with Halo: Master Chief Collection.

The recent map tease of Halo Infinite made the fans crazy with its incredible graphics and gorgeous art style. In December, 343 had disclosed why the team is spending so much time on this title.

The New Mass Effect Connects A Line To Andromeda

It was a big surprise by seeing the trailer of a new Mass Effect game in The Game Awards 2020. The release date is not yet confirmed but we can predict that BioWare is going to reveal in 2021, how the new Mass Effect is connected to the rest of the franchise.

If you focus on the trailer, it contains a line, “Ark 6 is away. Godspeed.” These Arks were the big ships used to travel to Andromeda, and if you remember only five of them were sent prior to the events of Mass Effect 3. Let’s see if the sixth one is constructed and ready to find a new home by leaving the Milky Way.

The Remake of Metal Gear Solid

Sony is now very much active about delivering games that contain nostalgia and give the PlayStation pride to the console owners. To revive Konami’s iconic action franchise Sony is now spreading its hands to work together.

There wouldn’t be any problem if a full remake is done by an outside studio. This will reduce Konami’s cost for development.

Xbox Includes Final Fantasy XIV

Having all the other Final Fantasy titles available on Xbox, it feels a void place remains for the FFXIV to be filled. It seems FFXIV is going to have a big year in 2021.

Phil Spencer said in an interview, “I wanted you to know, rest assured that we will be bringing that game [Final Fantasy XIV] to Xbox. We have a great relationship with Yoshida-san and we’re working through what it means to bring [to Xbox] a cross-platform MMO that they’ve run for years.”

The free trial of FFXIV is available which contains the base game. On Xbox Game Pass, a huge portion of Square Enix’s games is live.

A New Switch Model From Nintendo

This prediction is not so hard because it has previously reported many times that Nintendo is working on a new upgraded Switch and have a plan to release it in 2021. Every time Nintendo downplayed this rumor about the new hardware.

After the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft, it makes sense if a new Switch is coming in 2021 for its fans.

Pacers’ T.J. Warren to undergo surgery in the left foot, will definitely remain out

One of the breakout performers in the Orlando bubble, T.J. Warren’s follow-up performance had been put on pause for a while. On Thursday, the team announced that the forward is out indefinitely after suffering a stress fracture on his left foot that requires surgery. The Pacers described the surgery as repairing “a small navicular” fracture.

Warren had been playing through plantar fasciitis for the initial for hands of the season while averaging 15.5 points on 52.9 percent shooting in those game. This is a significant blow to the Pacers, as Warren lead the team in scoring last season at 19.8 points each game. The organisation will be buoyed by Victor Oladipo’s return to form. After two injury-riddled seasons, Oladipo is leading the franchise with 22.7 points per game on 61.4 offering shooting.

Warren had a similar season-ending surgery for a stress fracture in 2016 while he was with the Phoenix Suns, and he came back for the initiation of the following season in strong form. During his first six years in the NBA, he played only an average of 54.6 games per season.

After his team won on December 26, Pacers Head Coach Nate Bjorkgren said, “He’s always ready to go,” of Warren. “He looked good tonight. He was getting to the paint, getting hit, (and) getting to the foul line.”

In the three preseason games and one regular-season game that Warren did not play, Aaron Holiday started in his place. Typically, Holiday is a combo guard and not a forward. It appears the Pacers are able to get away with starting the youngster alongside Malcolm Brogdon and Victor Oladipo.
