Robo-plants on the rise could become a key player in the defence of your garden and farm

For the 90’s kids, Robo-cop was a mined piece of machinery and we went bazooka’s when we first saw the cool half-robot and half-human crime-fighting officer. Now, it seems that scientists have decided to bring fantasy into reality.

Introducing to the world, the Remote-controlled Venus flytrap “Robo-plants” and crops that tell farmers when they are hit by the disease. According to a recent research report, Robo-plants could soon become a reality after scientists developed a high-tech system for In communicating with vegetation.

In Singapore, researchers managed to link up plants to electrodes capable of monitoring the weak electrical pulses naturally emitted by the greenery. The technology was then used to trigger a Venus flytrap to snap its jaws shut at the push of a button on a smartphone app.

To take things further, the researchers then attached one of its jaws to a robotic arm and got the contraption to pick up a piece of wire half a millimeter thick, and catch a small falling object.

According to the reports, the technology is still in its early stages, but researchers believe it could eventually be used to build advanced “plant-based robots” that can pick up a host of fragile objects which are too delicate for rigid, robotic arms.

“These kinds of nature robots can be interfaced with other artificial robots (to make) hybrid systems.” Stated Chen Xiaodong, the lead author of a study on the research at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The Scientists have stated that they can stimulate the flytrap’s jaws to slam shut but can’t yet reopen them — a process that takes 10 or more hours to happen naturally.

Microsoft studying a new method of cooling its servers by dipping them in a bathtub

According to sources, Microsoft is conducting yet another weird experiment with its Servers. It started testing its servers by submerging them in liquid to improve their performance and energy efficiency. The company dipping its servers in what looks like a liquid bath.

Even though this particular immersion process has existed in the industry for a few years now, but Microsoft claims it’s “the first cloud provider that is running two-phase immersion cooling in a production environment.”

To cool the servers, they are completely submerged in a specially designed non-conductive fluid. The fluorocarbon-based liquid removes heat as it directly hits components and the fluid reaches a lower boiling point (122 degrees Fahrenheit or 50 degrees Celsius) to condense and fall back into the bath as a raining liquid. All this creates a closed-loop cooling system, reducing costs as no energy is needed to move the liquid around the tank.

According to Christian Belady, vice president of Microsoft’s data center advanced development group, “It’s essentially a bathtub. The rack will lie down inside that bathtub, and what you’ll see is boiling just like you’d see boiling in your pot. The boiling in your pot is at 100 degrees Celsius, and in this case, it’s at 50 degrees Celsius.”

Cryptominers have used a similar type of liquid cooling to mine for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Microsoft was inspired by the efficiency of such a system to mine vigorously for several hours.

A common practice in most data centers today, is to use outside air and cooling it by dropping it to temperatures below 35 degrees Celsius using evaporation. This is known as swamp cooling, but it uses a lot of water in the process.

“It potentially will eliminate the need for water consumption in data centers, so that’s a really important thing for us. It’s all about driving less and lower impact for wherever we land.”

Microsoft states that it is going to study the reliability implications of this new cooling and what types of burst workloads it could even help with for cloud and AI demand.

“We expect much better reliability. Our work with the Project Natick program a few years back demonstrated the importance of eliminating humidity and oxygen from an environment.”

Sony’s upcoming WF-1000XM4 earbuds receive official registration by the Bluetooth SIG and FCC

Earlier we have heard the news that Sony might be working on a new pair of WF-1000X earbuds. The device was presumed to the successors of the WF-1000XM3 that Sony released in July 2019. But, finally, the rumours are confirmed and according to sources, agencies such as the Bluetooth SIG and FCC have now certified the WF-1000XM4.

The earbuds are dubbed as the YY2948, with AK8 the grantee code for the Sony Corporation in the FCC’s case. The Bluetooth SIG does not give much away about the WF-1000XM4, beyond that it supports Bluetooth 5.2.

According to the FCC, the WF-1000XM4 has a MediaTek MT2822S SoC, up from the MT2811S found in the WF-1000XM3. From what we know, the MT2822 has a faster CPU combined with an improved DSP coprocessor.

The MediaTek chip also supports up to 24-bit and 192 kHz audio like the MT2811S, but the former utilizes Hardware Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and hardware gain control.

The FCC has provided a sketch of the WF-1000XM4’s charging case and since the manufacturer has included a MediaTek SoC, the possibilities of the WF-1000XM4 supporting any aptX codecs is nil. We have also heard that Sony might also include its proprietary LDAC codec. It is unclear when Sony will release the WF-1000XM4, but the FCC suggests that the earbuds will arrive before September.

It is also being reported that apart from supporting the latest Bluetooth 5.2, the device will also support the older Bluetooth 5.0. the price information is not yet known, but Sony will most likely keep the device somewhere around the same budget segment of the WF-1000XM3.

Finally, it’s possible to customize the RAM and Storage of a Mac

Apple is known for being truly committed to closed-source hardware and software and as such doesn’t allow anyone to replace or customize its hardware products. As such, it is nearly impossible to replace RAM on our Macs. However, some technicians in the country of China have reported successfully upgrading their Mac’s RAM.

According to the latest sources, technicians in Guangzhou, China have made it possible to upgrade the RAM and storage of Apple’s M1 Mac. Reports are flooding in, stating that the new silicon from Apple, sits well with other customized internal components.

There always had been a debate as to whether one can upgrade the components of a Mac, however, many have tried to upgrade the device only to fail in the end. The news was circulating on Chinese social media throughout the weekend. According to reports, the technicians managed to replace the RAM and SSD chips from the M1 Mac with a larger capacity module.

According to the released photos, the MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM was upgraded to 16GB of RAM with storage bumping from 256GB to 1TB. It was also reported that the macOS showed the correct information which means that the new modules are compatible with the software and hardware.

Apple sell’s its Macs with the RAM and memory chips soldered to the motherboard, which means that it is more challenging than a standard swapping procedure. The chances of failing are quite high, and any customization attempt means that the warranty is also breached, so you can’t take your device back to Apple.

The fact that we can safely replace and upgrade the component of the Mac is a pretty huge discovery and might open doors for more future possibilities.

Apple to start A15 Bionic production by end of May 2021

We all have heard the rumours about Apple unveiling its new iPhone 13 in September this year, however, more than the device we are all excited to peek at the new processor powering the upcoming iPhone.

Apple is reportedly been pulling extra timers to ensure that there is no delay in the release of the product. Coming to the processor, it is being reported that the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company will start mass production of the A15 Bionic chipset in late May.

Early reports also indicated a possible production date for the A15 Bionic. But, now it has been confirmed that the chip will enter into mass production by the end of May. The new silicon is also reported to be produced using TSMC’s enhanced 5nm node, also known as N5P.

Due to the involvement of TSMC’s new 5nm process node, it is estimated that the performance and power efficiency of Apple’s upcoming processor will be improved. Apple has currently booked more than half of TSMC’s fabs to increase the production rate of its processors. Last year the Cupertino giant had to delay the release of its iPhone 12 owing to the global pandemic. And this time the company has to face the global chip crisis.

As such, the iPhone maker doesn’t want to take any chances with its launch schedule and will be starting the production of its processor beforehand. As the global chip crisis has crippled most smartphone makers, Apple on the other is yet to experience any severe crisis like its competitors. At least for a few months, we can expect Apple to have a steady supply of components it needs to manufacture it’s iPhone 13.
