Apple’s Beats-Branded Game Controllers for iPhone: Real Story Behind Apple’s iPhone Game Controllers

After more than a decade of gaming hardware rumors that went nowhere, Apple finally looks serious about a controller — and it’s not even wearing an Apple logo. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing two game controllers for the iPhone, likely to launch under its Beats brand.

Why Beats, Not Apple?

This isn’t a random choice. Apple has increasingly used Beats as its testing ground for new product categories, letting it experiment without tying products to the premium Apple name. Beats already sells iPhone cases and USB-C cables that don’t follow Apple’s usual design playbook, and a controller would likely fit that same pattern — affordable, mass-market, and built to compete directly with popular third-party gaming accessories rather than sit at a premium price point.

Notably, the controllers are reportedly being engineered by Beats executives rather than Apple’s core hardware teams, and development has apparently been underway for over a year.

The Code Trail: T6502 and T1057

The rumor gained real weight when references to two unreleased Apple game controllers turned up in code within the first release candidate of macOS 26.7, released in mid-August, as spotted by MacRumors. The two hardware profiles — T6502 and T1057 — share standard controller components but differ slightly: T1057 includes motion-sensing hardware (accelerometer and gyroscope), while T6502 does not. Each device reportedly has dedicated hardware plug-ins in the code, which suggests these are genuine products in development rather than internal placeholders — though MacRumors also noted the code could refer to internal test hardware rather than a consumer release. Apple removed these references in the very next release candidate.

Interestingly, this code appeared in macOS rather than iOS, but Gurman’s reporting confirms the controllers are intended for the iPhone.

A Decade of False Starts

Apple has had plenty of chances to enter the controller market before. It required Apple TV games to support the Siri Remote as a gaming controller back in 2015 — a mandate it dropped within months. When the Vision Pro launched, Apple partnered with Sony to support PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers instead of building its own. Each time, Apple chose to lean on third-party support rather than commit to its own hardware — which is what makes this Beats-branded approach feel like a genuinely new direction.

FAQs

Q1. Will Apple’s new game controllers be released under the Apple brand?

No — reports indicate they’re likely to launch under Apple’s Beats brand rather than the main Apple lineup.

Q2. What features will the controllers have?

Based on code found in macOS 26.7, both devices are expected to include a D-pad, dual thumbsticks, shoulder buttons, Home and Menu buttons, and analog triggers, with one model also adding motion-sensing capability.
