What’s Actually New with the M5 MacBook Air
The biggest headline beyond the chip is storage — Apple has doubled the base storage to 512GB SSD, effectively doubling the entry-level capacity compared to previous MacBook Air models, while the new SSD also delivers up to twice the read and write speeds.

On performance, Apple claims the M5-powered MacBook Air delivers up to 9.5 times faster AI performance than M1-based models, with improvements across 3D rendering, video processing, and multitasking. Each GPU core now includes a Neural Accelerator — a design borrowed from the M5 Pro and M5 Max — enabling on-device AI tasks like local LLM inference and real-time video enhancement without cloud dependency.
Unified memory bandwidth improves to 153GBps — a 28% jump over M4 — enabling smoother multitasking and faster app launches. Web browsing is also claimed to be up to 50% faster compared to a PC laptop with an Intel Core Ultra X7.
Wireless connectivity gets a meaningful upgrade too, with the Apple N1 chip bringing Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 — the same as on the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models. The design remains unchanged: same fanless aluminium chassis, same four colour options, same MagSafe charging.
For comparison, the previous M4 MacBook Air launched at ₹99,900 in India — so the M5 comes in ₹20,000 higher at base, though it brings double the storage and a meaningfully faster chip in return.
