Tim Cook’s warning just became reality, but maybe not for the reason most people assumed. Apple has raised iPhone prices across its entire current lineup in Japan, with increases touching double digits on some models, and the cause traces back to currency, not chips.

Apple Hikes iPhone Prices in Japan by Up to 11%: The Full Price Hike Breakdown

According to MacRumors, which cited Spanish blog iPhoneros as the first to spot the change, every current iPhone model on Apple’s Japan online store received a price bump on the same day.

ModelPrice Increase
iPhone 17 Air+11.3%
iPhone 17 Pro Max+10.3%
iPhone 17+10.0%
iPhone 16+8.7%
iPhone 17 Pro+8.3%
iPhone 17e+8.0%

To put a real number on it, the Japan Times reported the entry-level iPhone 17 with 256GB storage now starts at ¥142,800 ($879.29), up from ¥129,800, while the iPhone 17 Pro at the same storage tier jumped from ¥179,800 to ¥194,800.

Apple Hikes iPhone Prices in Japan by Up to 11%

Why This Isn’t the Memory Chip Story You’d Expect

Here’s the twist: last month, Apple raised prices on Macs, iPads, Vision Pro, Apple TV, and HomePods worldwide, and that round was explicitly tied to the ongoing memory chip shortage driving up component costs. This time is different. According to Notebookcheck, the iPhone-specific hike in Japan lines up instead with the yen trading near its weakest level in roughly 40 years against the US dollar, which erodes the dollar value of Apple’s Japan sales and pushes the company to realign local pricing with other markets.

Notably, iPhone pricing stayed untouched during last month’s Mac and iPad price hikes, making this the first iPhone-specific adjustment of the year, and Apple has also quietly raised iCloud+ subscription prices in eight other countries, including Japan, for the same currency-related reasons.

Will Other Countries Be Next?

This is the part worth tempering expectations on. Because the Japan increase appears driven by currency movement rather than rising input costs, multiple outlets note it’s unlikely to be mirrored in other regions unless Apple signals otherwise, and pricing in the US has stayed unchanged so far. That said, Apple’s fiscal Q3 earnings call on July 30 is expected to offer more clarity on where pricing goes from here, especially with the iPhone 18 series expected to launch in September.

This kind of currency-and-component-driven pricing squeeze isn’t unique to Apple either. We’ve tracked the same underlying pressure in our coverage of Xiaomi and Redmi’s tablet price hikes this year and the broader global memory shortage reshaping device pricing worldwide.

The Takeaway

Apple’s Japan iPhone price hikes are real, official, and largely tied to yen weakness rather than a global cost surge, meaning your country isn’t necessarily next just because Japan moved first. Watch Apple’s July 30 earnings call for the clearest signal yet on whether this stays contained or spreads.
