Apple’s $599 MacBook Neo Beats a $13,000 Mac Pro by 3x — But There’s a Catch

A $599 laptop outperforming a $13,000 workstation sounds like a headline designed to go viral — and it is. But the story behind it is genuinely fascinating, and the caveat is just as important as the result.

MacBook Neo vs Mac Pro: Benchmark Breakdown

The Win — and the Huge Catch

The MacBook Neo outperformed the $13,000 Mac Pro by a whopping 3x in single-core Geekbench performance — but there is a huge catch: almost every conceivable program is multi-threaded these days, and for tasks where the single-core metric is important, the MacBook Neo’s 8GB RAM would constitute a substantial bottleneck.

That said, the A18 Pro’s single-core result of 3,461 beats Intel’s Lunar Lake Core Ultra 5 by 38% and the Snapdragon X Plus by 43% — meaning for everyday tasks like browsing, documents, and light photo editing, this $599 machine is genuinely fast. Apple says the A18 Pro is up to 50% faster for everyday tasks and up to 3x faster for on-device AI workloads compared to rival Intel Core Ultra 5 laptops at a similar price — and benchmarks back that up.

The bigger story here is what Apple has achieved at $599. The device is capped at 8GB of RAM with no upgrade option, lacks a backlit keyboard on the base model, and only supports one external display — real compromises that define its ceiling. But for students and everyday users eyeing a capable budget MacBook, the MacBook Neo is a landmark product — the most accessible entry point into Apple Silicon ever made.
