AMD Readies Ryzen 7 8700F & Ryzen 5 8400F: iGPU-Less Desktop APUs for AM5 Platforms

AMD is gearing up to launch two new Ryzen 8000 APUs designed for the AM5 platform, namely the Ryzen 7 8700F and the Ryzen 5 8400F. These latest additions to AMD’s Ryzen lineup were unveiled during the AI PC Summit event held in China, where the company showcased its extensive range of mainstream and budget-friendly desktop CPU offerings.

More About AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F

The lineup spans older AM4 parts like the Ryzen 3000 and Ryzen 5000XT series, as well as the newer Ryzen 5000GT chips, alongside the introduction of the Ryzen 8000 APU family. During the event, AMD also confirmed their RDNA 3+ GPU architecture. The new products listed, Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F are expected to be part of the “F” SKUs lineup indicating that they will not have integrated graphics units (iGPUs). This choice aligns with AMD and Intel’s use of “F” SKUs for CPUs without iGPUs. Notably, AMD recently released the Ryzen 5 7500F CPU, which did not include the RDNA 2 iGPU in Ryzen 7000 chips.

The AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F are anticipated to feature a design without an iGPU and may utilize the Zen4 architecture seen in Hawk Point (AM5) desktop APUs. In terms of specs, it is expected that the Ryzen 7 8700F will be similar to the Ryzen 7 8700G, with its offering of 8 cores 16 threads, 16 MB of L3 cache, and a TDP of 65W. Likewise, the Ryzen 5 8400F could resemble the Ryzen 5 8500G with its configuration of 6 cores, 12 threads, and 16 MB of L3cache.

It’s possible that AMD might consider using a 6 core 6 thread setup, for the Ryzen 5 8400F to make it more competitive as a choice a tactic they’ve used before. However, this option is seen as probable compared to the configuration. More information, such as clock speeds will be disclosed once AMD officially introduces these SKUs. Initially, these products may have limited availability in the market (APAC) with plans, for global availability later on.

FAQs

  1. What does the "F" suffix in AMD's Ryzen 8000 APUs indicate?

The “F” suffix typically denotes that the CPUs lack integrated graphics units (iGPUs), making them suitable for users who utilize dedicated graphics cards.

  2. Will the Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F APUs be available globally?

While initial availability may be limited to the Chinese market (APAC), AMD is expected to release these APUs worldwide in the future.
