The digital space has become a thriving platform for stories that mainstream cinema often overlooks, and OTT Gram Chikitsalay—a new Telugu web series streaming on Aha—attempts to tap into that potential with its rural medical drama premise. Set in a remote village, the show follows Dr. Abhiram, an idealistic young doctor who leaves his cushy city job to serve in a crumbling government clinic, facing bureaucratic hurdles, skeptical villagers, and his own personal demons along the way.

With a mix of social commentary, emotional storytelling, and a dash of humor, Gram Chikitsalay aims to be more than just another medical drama—it wants to be a mirror to India’s struggling rural healthcare system. But does it succeed? In this review, we’ll dissect the series’ strengths, its missed opportunities, and whether it’s worth your weekend binge.

A Promising Premise with Uneven Execution

The first thing that strikes you about Gram Chikitsalay is its authenticity. The production design nails the rustic aesthetic of a dilapidated government clinic—peeling walls, rusty equipment, and the ever-present scent of antiseptic and dust. The series opens strong, with Dr. Abhiram (played by newcomer Varun Tej) arriving in the village, only to be met with indifference from locals who’ve long given up on the system. His initial struggles—convincing a mother to vaccinate her child, dealing with a corrupt official siphoning off medicines—are compelling and set up what could have been a gripping narrative.

However, as the episodes progress, the writing begins to falter. While some subplots (like a young girl’s battle with tuberculosis) are handled with sensitivity, others (such as a forced romantic angle between Abhiram and the local schoolteacher) feel tacked on and underdeveloped. The series tries to balance too many themes—corruption, superstition, doctor-patient relationships—and ends up giving none the depth they deserve.

Performances: The Beating Heart of the Show

Where Gram Chikitsalay truly shines is in its performances. Varun Tej, in his OTT debut, brings a quiet intensity to Dr. Abhiram, making his idealism feel earned rather than preachy. The supporting cast, particularly veteran actor Tanikella Bharani as the cynical senior nurse, adds layers to what could have been one-dimensional characters.

The real standout, though, is child artist Priya as Lakshmi, a malnourished girl whose arc becomes the emotional core of the series. Her scenes with Varun are heartbreaking and elevate the material beyond its script limitations.

The Verdict: Should You Watch It?

OTT Gram Chikitsalay is a mixed bag. It has moments of brilliance—especially when focusing on the harsh realities of rural healthcare—but is weighed down by inconsistent writing and unnecessary melodrama. If you’re looking for a socially relevant drama with strong performances, it’s worth a watch. Just don’t expect the depth of Anantharam or the tight storytelling of Panchayat.

Conclusion

OTT Gram Chikitsalay is a well-intentioned series that stumbles in execution but still manages to leave an impact. Its heart is in the right place, even if its storytelling isn’t always.
