iPhone 16 Teardown Reveals Battery Tech, Durability, and Repairability Insights

When it comes to repairs, an iPhone 16 teardown issued by iFixit showed the new models are more repairable than previous versions. In the teardown, they also revealed how Apple used some electric adhesive to hold down the batteries on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.

Breakout said that the iPhone 16 Pro models have batteries in metallic casings. But this latest clip offered an even clearer look at the kit. In the case of the Pro Max, it misses out on a metal battery to go where the Apple-branded Logic Board sits in an iPhone 16 Pro. Somehow, though neither Pro model employs the electric adhesive identified in iFixit’s teardown.

As famous for putting smartphones to durability tests, YouTuber JerryRigEverything has performed a series of extreme endurance tests against the iPhone 16 Pro Max. A video from the YouTuber detailing durability tests shows that although scratches appeared on the glass and titanium frame, it was able to withstand scratches and fire bending tests for iPhone 16 Pro Max. That said, the device was still operational.

JerryRigEverything’s teardown video shows the internals, which are similar to non-Pro versions. Apple highlights internal designs as the reason is easy to repair new iPhones. Notably, the iPhone 16 Pro features a metallic battery enclosure, potentially as a response to upcoming EU battery regulations.

Rumors suggested that metallic battery cases could improve heat dissipation and enable higher battery densities. The iPhone 16 Pro has seen a significant 9.4% increase in battery capacity compared to previous models, with the 16 and 16 Plus also featuring larger batteries. However, the reason why the Pro and Pro Max models lack electric glue remains unclear.
