While the Manchester City men’s team might be stuttering a little in their football campaign, the women’s team showed their credentials by winning the 2019/20 FA Cup against Everton at the Wembley Stadium.
Although the score was tied 1-1 at the end of normal time, City went on to score two goals in extra time and seal the trophy with a final scoreline of 3-1. For the Sky Blues, Sam Mewis, Georgina Stanway and Janine Beckine scored the goals while for Everton, the solitary goal came from Valerie Gauvin.
The match started on a pretty high octane note with City leading the charge and creating most of the chances. But, they were unable to carve out a significant goal out with Mewis hitting a few shots on target.
However, it did come from her feet just before half-time and opened the scoring to make it 1-0. But, as the second half started, it was Everton who came out all guns blazing. And eventually, they had the prize for their effort, when Valerie Gauvin scored a sterling goal and equalized to make it 1-1.
Eventually, there were a few chances for the taking at both ends, both the conversion was not to be there in normal time. However, with a few signs of fatigue in the Everton team combined with City’s experience of playing in a few finals, the Sky Blues found a way twice in the final 10 minutes to secure the cup with an emphatic 3-1 victory.
It is to be noted that Man City Women had an absolutely fantastic run on the road to the final. It started off with a 3-2 derby win over rivals Manchester United, which was followed up by a 10-0 thrashing of Ipswich Town. They then went onto win 2-1 against Leicester City but, the key moments came in the semifinal against Arsenal with a 2-1 win.
And starting as favourites in the grand final, they completely lived up to the billing and won their third FA Cup title, having previously won it in 2017 and 2019.
