Fluminense have won their first ever Copa Libertadores title by defeating six-time champions Boca Juniors 2-1 after extra time. The Argentine side were searching for their seventh title, but a late goal from Kennedy ended their hopes of winning the title on penalties once again.

The game was a cagey affair until the opening goal had been scored, with both teams careful not to make a mistake. Cano opened the scoring for the eventual champions with a well-taken first time finish, sending his time into the dressing room with the lead for half time.

With former Manchester United players Edinson Cavani in attack and Sergio Romero in goal, Boca had a decent chance on paper. They only found their way back into the game when Luis Advincula equalised in the second half.

And in spite of their goal, Fluminense dominated the game both with and without the ball, retaining most of the possession. Real Madrid legend Marcelo had to make way in the second half to freshen up the team. And in extra time, substitute John Kennedy put the Brazilians ahead with a thunderous strike from long distance.

He was then sent off for his wild celebration with the fans, before Boca’s Frank Fabra also saw red for slapping Nino.

Fluminense will now play at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, and will also appear in the longer version to be held in 2025.
