A lot goes on behind the scenes to complete transfers in football. And while some deals are easily executed, others can fail at the final moment. In this article, we’re taking a look at three big failed transfers in world football.
5 big failed transfers in world football
5. Carlos Tevez to AC Milan
Before making a €9 million move to join Juventus from Manchester City, Tevez was in talks to join AC Milan. And while the deal with the Rossoneri collapsed, he still ended up in Italy, with arguably the biggest club in the country.
4. Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid
While Mbappe might end up at Real Madrid this summer, Madrid’s 3 bids, worth up to €200 million were all rejected this past summer. As a result, their advances to sign the Frenchman one year earlier failed, and they are now hoping to sign him for free in June.
3. Harry Kane to Manchester City
The England captain had a €150 million plus add-ons bid for his services from the Sky Blues. The reason behind the failed transfer was Daniel Levy pushing to keep the striker, and he ultimately succeeded in his efforts.
2. Kaka to Manchester City
Kaka’s failed transfer to Manchester City in 2009 could have been worth €130 million. Instead, he went on to join Real Madrid as one of their most prized signings. The Brazilian would eventually return to AC Milan after joining Los Blancos.
1. Neymar to Barcelona
The Brazilian was pushing to return to Barcelona in 2018, but was unable to make the move happen. He now has a long-term contract with PSG and is still the most expensive signing in history of world football.
