Mourinho Mbappé: Coach Hits Back at ‘Ridiculous’ Criticism Before Real Madrid vs Villarreal

Mourinho Mbappé is central here. Kylian Mbappé’s left knee injury timeline has turned into a tactical flashpoint. On October 9, José Mourinho called the backlash “ridiculous” and confirmed that the forward would start against Villarreal on October 10. A quiet international break suddenly became a public test of medical judgement.

What Did Mourinho Say About the Mbappé Criticism?

Mourinho didn’t hedge. Speaking one day before Real Madrid’s La Liga home fixture against Villarreal, he called the backlash “ridiculous” and, according to ESPN, said the forward would start.

The coach also addressed two specific claims that had circulated during the international break. On Paris, Mourinho said the venue in question was hosting a private Paris Fashion Week event rather than open issues Jose Mourinho has wrestled with since taking charge in Madrid.

Why the Paris and Switzerland Trip Sparked Outrage

The backlash wasn’t really about a knee. It centred on the optics of an international break, when a club’s most expensive asset is expected to stay out of sight, recover, and keep things quiet. Mbappé instead appeared in two countries within days, while the club’s medical staff monitored his left knee problem.

Here’s the thing: the injury timeline is tight. Reports said the problem occurred during a France–Turkey Nations League match on September 25, 2026, leaving roughly two weeks before the Villarreal fixture. During that period, every public appearance becomes evidence in a trial held entirely on social media. Real Madrid have endured a turbulent stretch of their own, and the Mourinho Madrid post-match coverage has seldom been calm. When results wobble, a manager defending his striker’s holiday photographs becomes a proxy battle over control of the dressing room.

Real Madrid vs Villarreal: What the Fixture Now Means

The available reports do not confirm a final result, venue, player statistics, or any table impact for the October 10, 2026 fixture. Kickoff is set for 15:00 local time today.

Mourinho said Mbappé would start, but the available reports do not confirm the match-day lineup. That brief statement matters. By publicly backing a returning striker, the manager is also putting his own judgement on the line. If Mbappé’s knee holds and he scores, Mourinho’s press conference looks like leadership. If it doesn’t, those same quotes become the opening paragraph of a very different story.
