Some classics take decades to find a new audience. East of Eden needed one weekend. Netflix’s seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, led by Florence Pugh, landed at #1 on the Global Top 10 English TV list with 6.5 million views in its first four days.

How the Numbers Stack Up?

That 6.5 million figure comes from roughly 45.5 million hours viewed, divided by the show’s seven-hour runtime. It’s a respectable start for a dense, prestige literary drama rather than a blockbuster one. Among recent Netflix limited series, it sits just behind Black Rabbit (6.6 million) and Eric (6.8 million), and ahead of The Residence and The Fall of the House of Usher (both about 6.3 million). It’s far from the 22.9 million of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, but that’s exactly where a heavy period drama usually lands.

The regional story is stronger. The show’s global average ranking improved from 4.9 on premiere day to 1.9, and it reached the Top 10 in 80 countries, claiming the #1 spot in 22. Europe has taken to it most, with #1 rankings in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, according to FlixPatrol data. In the US it climbed to #1 over the weekend and was holding at #2 afterwards. In Asia it’s a slower burn, sitting around #6 in India.

East of Eden: The “Netflix Effect” on Steinbeck

The adaptation, written by Zoe Kazan, stars Pugh as the cunning Cathy Ames, alongside Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist as brothers Adam and Charles Trask. Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Hoon Lee and Ciarán Hinds round out the cast.

Its effect on publishing has been dramatic. Penguin Classics reported a nearly 200% jump in sales across all formats after the series was greenlit. After release, Steinbeck’s novel hit #1 on the Amazon Best Sellers list, and the audiobook landed on the retailer’s “Best of #BookTok” list.

Critics are positive too. The show holds an 86% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 82% audience score, and Netflix is already positioning it as an awards contender for limited series.
