“LEGO Friends: Heartlake the Musical” Hits Netflix: Kenny Ortega Brings Real Actors and Digital Bricks Together

Imagine a High School Musical mastermind, real actors, giant LEGO props, and a treehouse that needs saving. That’s “LEGO Friends: Heartlake the Musical,” the first live-action/CGI hybrid film in LEGO’s history, and it’s almost here.

The Story: A Key, a City, and a Treehouse

Daisy is a creative young girl who builds a whole world out of LEGO bricks. After she finds a mysterious key, she’s magically swept into the colorful universe of Heartlake City. While looking for a way home, she meets the franchise’s beloved characters and learns that a local landmark is in danger. Together they set out on a song-filled mission to save a legendary treehouse.

What Makes It Different?

This isn’t standard animation or green-screen filmmaking. The production, built with virtual production studio Final Pixel, mixes real actors, oversized physical LEGO props, and Unreal Engine environments displayed on LED stages. That gives it a tangible look LEGO hasn’t tried before.

Behind the camera is Kenny Ortega, known for High School Musical, Descendants, and Hocus Pocus. He has said his family is a LEGO-loving household, so this project is personal for him.

The Cast

Young British performers lead the ensemble, including Jada Langley, Gino Ochello, Hannah Gracie, Angelina Li, and Meesha Garbett, who is known for Matilda the Musical.
