Some stories stay with a country for decades. The Child, known in Spanish as El Niño, is one of them, and Netflix is bringing it to a global audience on November 27, 2026. It’s a quiet, emotional drama that’s already getting attention ahead of its release.

The Child: The Real Story Behind the Film

Directed and written by Mariano Barroso, the film adapts Fernando Aramburu’s novel of the same name. Barroso also produced it with Rafael Portela. The story is based on a real tragedy that shook Spain: a gas explosion in a town in Vizcaya in October 1980 that killed several children. Aramburu serves as executive producer and has said these children deserve a lasting place in the country’s memory. Barroso described the adaptation as both a challenge and a privilege.

The plot follows Mariaje and her father-in-law Nicasio, the mother and grandfather of one of the children who died. Neither will accept what happened. Their story is one of discovery and resilience, as each searches for their own way through the loss. According to Netflix’s synopsis, the journey is full of unexpected emotions, so it doesn’t sound like a story about grief alone.
