Will Gennaro Gattuso be the new Spurs boss after Paulo Fonseca’s move collapses?

Tottenham is reportedly in talks with Gennaro Gattuso for their vacant head coach position. This took place after a collapse in their efforts to appoint Paulo Fonseca. A former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk manager, Fonseca, was expected to be José Mourinho’s successor. He had even verbally agreed to sign a contract. But he was made aware of tax-related issues which were previously overlooked. While in Italy, he was provided with tax breaks by the law of the land which didn’t apply in the UK. Thus Fonseca wanted his pay adjusted accordingly.

Tottenham’s sorrows with appointing a new manager can’t just find a break. In the last couple of weeks, they have seen plans with the likes of Antonio Conte, Hansi Flick, and even Mauricio Pochettino fall off. Some other targets were Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers, and Bayern’s newly appointed gaffer Julian Nagelsmann.

Fabio Paratici, Tottenham’s new managing director of football, had met with Fonseca in Como to discuss next season. This had him gain full faith in Fonseca and he was looking forward to a swap with Mourinho. Mourinho has taken the post vacated by Fonseca at Roma after being sacked by Spurs in April.

Tottenham are now in talks with Gattuso

Gattuso shockingly left Fiorentina on Thursday after just 22 days into his appointment. His availability means Spurs could rely on him to take up the job in London. Spurs look to cut a deal as quickly and smoothly as possible with the former Italy international. He has had a decent share of managerial experience working with clubs like Napoli and Milan in the past.

Gattuso left Fiorentina over disagreements on their transfer policy and it was all done “by mutual agreement”. He managed to win the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2020. Although he has failed to finish in Serie A’s top 4 in his managerial career.

Gattuso, in his playing years at Milan, infamously headbutted Tottenham’s then first-team coach Joe Jordan. It was a heated moment in a Champions League tie at San Siro in the February of 2011. He apologized for the act and was banned for 4 matches. Now he might just return to the club as their boss. A work of fate? Whatever it is, we hope Tottenham finally manages silverware under him.
