The Story: A Forbidden Island Romance
The 10-episode series is described as “a simmering, sun-soaked romance set across multiple summers on Prince Edward Island about Lucy, a young woman navigating her 20s and her first real love with her best friend’s brother, the one person she was never supposed to fall for.”
The story follows Lucy, a woman who is visiting her best friend on Prince Edward Island but ends up falling for the one person she shouldn’t: her best friend’s brother, Felix.
If the series stays close to Carley Fortune’s novel, Lucy finds herself caught in an impossible position between the two people she loves most: her best friend and her brother, the man she was never supposed to fall for. The novel begins by flashing back to Lucy’s first meeting with Felix during her first trip to Prince Edward Island.
Based on the Bestselling Novel by Carley Fortune
The captivating novel, which was Fortune’s third contemporary romance, is a love story told over the course of several summers, similar to her debut Every Summer After. However, this story takes place on Prince Edward Island.
The adored Carley Fortune novel is her second to become a book-to-screen adaptation, and following the success of Every Year After on Prime Video, fans can’t wait to see these characters come to life.

Fortune said: “I fell in love with Prince Edward Island first in the pages of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and again when I visited with my best friend in my early 20s. That vacation, the beauty of the island, the warmth of its people, and the friendships that sustain us are the foundation of This Summer Will Be Different. I’m thrilled to bring this sweeping love story to the screen with Netflix and to transport audiences to the glittering shores and windswept beaches of PEI.”
The Lead Cast: Sophie Nélisse, Francesca Reale and Roby Attal
The main trio’s casting was led by Sophie Nélisse (Heated Rivalry, The Book Thief, Yellowjackets) as Lucy Ashby. Next came the announcement of Roby Attal (The Sex Lives of College Girls, The Haunting of Bly Manor) and Francesca Reale’s (Stranger Things, Do Revenge) casting as Clark siblings, Felix and Bridget.
French Canadian actress Sophie Nélisse (Heated Rivalry, Yellowjackets) has booked the first major role in the upcoming book-to-TV adaptation of the Carley Fortune novel for Netflix, This Summer Will Be Different.
