Urmila Matondkar’s Big Comeback Just Got a Netflix Upgrade

A decade-plus away from the spotlight, and Urmila Matondkar is returning not with one comeback project, but two — and this latest one comes with serious streaming muscle behind it. Netflix India has locked in the 90s Bollywood icon for a brand-new series, and the team behind it should sound very familiar to anyone who’s watched Indian streaming take off.

Urmila Matondkar: The Big Announcement

Netflix India has signed Urmila Matondkar to headline its next high-profile series, produced by The Viral Fever (TVF) — the studio behind Kota Factory and Panchayat. This marks TVF’s third collaboration with Netflix, following Kota Factory Seasons 2 and 3, and Hello Bachchhan.

What We Know So Far?

The plot itself is being kept tightly under wraps, but sources indicate the show is set in and around the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), with Matondkar playing the role of a principal. No word yet on the rest of the ensemble cast, and Netflix has declined to comment on the project officially.

The Creative Team Behind It

Director Divyanshu Malhotra and writer Puneet Batra aren’t strangers to each other or to TVF. The two previously collaborated on 2018’s coming-of-age romantic drama Flames, and have separately built strong track records with the studio — Malhotra directing Cubicles and Sixer, while Batra’s writing credits include Kota Factory, Operation MBBS, and Court Kacheri. That pedigree suggests this new project will lean into the kind of grounded, youth-centric storytelling TVF has built its reputation on.

Urmila Matondkar’s Long-Awaited Return

This Netflix series is just one part of Matondkar’s re-emergence after more than a decade away from major acting roles. One of Bollywood’s defining stars of the 1990s and 2000s, she built her career on films like Rangeela, Satya, Indian, Judaai, Ek Hasina Thi, and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. Her last substantial lead role came in the 2014 Marathi film Ajoba, and her most recent screen credit was a song appearance in 2018’s Blackmail. More recently, she served as a judge on Zee TV’s DID Super Moms Season 3.

Her actual acting comeback, however, is arriving first through a different project: Tiwari, a 14-episode revenge thriller series also featuring JD Chakravarthy, Gauahar Khan, and Rajesh Sharma. Directed by Saurabh Varma, the show follows a woman hunting down the person who framed her after 14 wrongful years in prison. Tiwari is currently in post-production and targeting a February 2027 release on a major streaming platform.

TVF’s Growing Empire

This announcement lands as TVF juggles multiple fronts simultaneously — the studio is also awaiting the theatrical release of its first cinema production, The Vvaan: Force of the Forest, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Tamannaah Bhatia, hitting screens on September 25. Founded by Arunabh Kumar, TVF has built its reputation on youth-centric, family-friendly storytelling through hits like TVF Pitchers, Kota Factory, Panchayat, Gullak, Gram Chikitsalaya, Yeh Meri Family, and Aspirants — making it one of the most consistent content engines in Indian streaming today.
