From Marathi Cinema Royalty to Ramayana’s Bharat: Who Is Addinath Kothare?

A National Award-winning actor, a filmmaker, and now a personal life headline — Addinath Kothare has been trending for two very different reasons this week: his upcoming role in Ramayana and his recently announced separation from wife Urmila Kanetkar. Here’s a closer look at the man behind both stories.

Addinath Kothare: Overview

A Legacy Rooted in Marathi Cinema

Born to veteran actor-director Mahesh Kothare, Addinath grew up immersed in Marathi cinema and made his screen debut as a child artist in 1994. Over the years, he built a strong reputation for versatility, headlining acclaimed Marathi projects like Zapatlela 2, Chandramukhi, and Panchak, while also stepping into direction with his National Award-winning debut film Paani.

Crossing Over Into Bollywood and Beyond

Addinath expanded his footprint into Hindi cinema with a memorable turn as cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar in the 2021 sports drama 83. He’s now part of one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious upcoming projects — Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part epic Ramayana, starring alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi. Addinath will play Bharat, a role he’s described as “life-transforming” and “humbling,” further cementing his rise from Marathi cinema to a pan-Indian spotlight, in a career detailed further on his Wikipedia page.

A Personal Chapter Closes

Alongside his career milestones, Addinath and Urmila Kanetkar — who first met on the sets of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan in 2006 and married in 2011 — announced their separation after nearly 15 years together. In a joint statement, the couple emphasized mutual respect and a continued commitment to co-parenting their daughter, Jizah, while requesting privacy during this transition.
