Lokesh Kanagaraj Just Shut Down Every Rumor About The LCU Being Dead

Fans panicking over the future of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe can finally exhale. Filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj has directly addressed speculation that his shared universe — popularly nicknamed the LCU by fans — has been quietly shelved, and his answer leaves little room for doubt.

Speaking at a recent event, Kanagaraj clarified that while he might scale back his home production banner GSquad if needed, the LCU itself isn’t going anywhere. He noted that the “LCU” tag was never something he coined himself — it was fan-given, and he simply adopted it, much like broader interconnected franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe popularized the shared-universe format globally.

What’s Confirmed To Be Coming for Lokesh Kanagaraj?

Why The Timeline Makes Sense

Kanagaraj was blunt about sequencing: he can’t abruptly declare an end to commitments like Kaithi 2 or Vikram 2, but he also can’t rush them while juggling other major projects. Once he wraps directing duties on Allu Arjun’s much-anticipated AA23, LCU development is expected to properly resume.

For context, the LCU began with Kaithi and expanded through Vikram (2022) and Leo (2023), weaving character arcs and story threads across films — a rare feat in Indian cinema at this scale.

What’s Next For The Director

Before any of that, Kanagaraj is stepping in front of the camera for the first time, playing the lead in Arun Matheswaran’s DC, releasing July 31, 2026, alongside Wamiqa Gabbi and Sanjana AK.
