Apple‘s successor to the iPhone 16e is shaping up to be the most capable budget iPhone ever made — and the most important. The iPhone 17e is expected to launch in early 2026 with a spec sheet that closes the gap between the SE line and the main iPhone series more than any previous generation. Here’s everything confirmed or strongly rumoured before launch.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Full Spec Comparison

The jump from iPhone 16e to 17e is substantial across almost every dimension — particularly the move to Dynamic Island, the Apple-designed 5G modem, and the RAM doubling that enables Apple Intelligence features.

Why the Apple-Designed 5G Modem Is the Biggest Story

Every other spec upgrade on the iPhone 17e is meaningful — but the in-house Apple 5G modem is the one that changes everything structurally. Apple has been developing its own cellular modem for years to reduce dependence on Qualcomm, cut component costs, and integrate connectivity more tightly with its silicon. The iPhone 16e was the first iPhone to ship with Apple’s modem. If the 17e carries a second-generation version, it could deliver meaningfully better battery life than the 16e’s Qualcomm-based predecessor — modem power efficiency is one of the largest contributors to real-world battery drain.

The Dynamic Island upgrade from notch is the most visible change and the one that closes the aesthetic gap between the e-series and the mainstream iPhone 17 lineup. Dynamic Island is now standard across all 2026 iPhone models — its appearance on the 17e removes the last visual marker that distinguished the budget model.

A19 over A16 is a three-generation chip jump. The A19 brings the neural engine performance needed to run Apple Intelligence locally — which, combined with 8GB RAM, makes the iPhone 17e a fully capable Apple Intelligence device rather than a limited one. This matters because Apple Intelligence is increasingly the reason people upgrade iPhones in 2026.

The Action Button addition — absent on the iPhone 16e — brings a programmable physical shortcut key that power users have come to rely on since it debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro. Its inclusion on the 17e signals Apple is no longer treating the e-series as a stripped-down product.

Should You Wait or Buy Now?

If you’re on an iPhone 13 or older, waiting for the 17e is worthwhile — the A19 chip, Dynamic Island, and Apple Intelligence support represent a generational leap. If you’re on an iPhone 15 or 16e specifically, the upgrade case is less compelling unless the modem battery improvement is dramatic.

The price is the key unknown. If Apple prices the iPhone 17e at $499 — below the iPhone 16e’s $599 launch price — it becomes the default recommendation for anyone who doesn’t need a triple-camera system or ProMotion display.
