FC Goa Captain Iker Guarrotxena Sent Off Before Super Cup Semifinal: The Shocking Tunnel Incident Explained

Drama erupted before kickoff at Fatorda. In one of the most bizarre incidents in Indian football history, FC Goa captain Iker Guarrotxena received a straight red card in the tunnel moments before the Super Cup 2025-26 semifinal against Mumbai City FC. The Spanish midfielder never even made it onto the pitch, leaving his team scrambling to reorganize just minutes before one of their biggest matches of the season.

Iker Guarrotxena Incident Overview

What Happened in the Tunnel?

The shocking dismissal stemmed from an altercation near the tunnel as both teams lined up for the kickoff routine. While cameras didn’t capture the exact moment, the referee deemed Iker Guarrotxena’s behavior serious enough to warrant immediate dismissal for dissent. The situation escalated quickly, with officials interpreting the Spaniard’s reaction as crossing acceptable conduct boundaries.

FC Goa were informed immediately, forcing them to make an emergency reshuffle. Javier Siverio was inserted into the starting XI, while Borja Herrera inherited the captain’s armband. The sudden change stunned supporters at Fatorda and added unexpected tension to an already high-stakes semifinal.

Resilience Despite the Setback

Despite losing their most influential leader before a ball was kicked, FC Goa showed remarkable character. The Gaurs led 2-0 at halftime through goals from David Timor and Brison Fernandes, proving their depth and determination to defend their Super Cup crown.

This fighting spirit reflected their tournament journey—after an opening defeat to NorthEast United FC, they recovered brilliantly with victories over Jamshedpur FC and Inter Kashi to top their group. The semifinal offered redemption after their disappointing AFC Champions League 2 campaign, where they suffered five consecutive losses.

The Bigger Picture

Guarrotxena’s dismissal raises questions about player conduct and the pressures of knockout football. As defending champions playing at home, expectations were sky-high. The incident serves as a reminder that composure matters just as much off the field as on it, especially in crucial tournament moments.

For Indian football fans, the drama only added intrigue to what was already shaping up as a thrilling semifinal encounter. FC Goa’s ability to perform despite the chaos showcased the resilience that makes the Super Cup one of India’s most exciting football competitions.

As the match unfolds, one thing is certain: this tunnel incident will be remembered as one of the most dramatic pre-match moments in Indian football history.
