Aymeric Laporte is one of the best players not to have made his international debut yet. But that could change in shocking fashion this summer, as Spanish national team coach Luis Enrique has asked for Laporte to be called up to the squad for Euro 2020.
The player was born in France but has been categorically ruled out of Didier Deschamps’ plans for the French national team. Having moved to Bilbao as a teenager, Laporte has Spanish citizenship after spending 8 years in the country.
Despite that, Laporte represented France on various youth levels, having done so for France U21 last. He has been scouted by Spain since 2016, and could finally make his national team debut at the ripe age of 26.
The RFEF is yet to hear an official declaration, but that is expected to be a mere formality for the player. As reported by Marca, there are no problems to the move and it could be confirmed as soon as the upcoming few days.

Laporte moved to Manchester City in January 2018 for €65 million and has won the Premier League title thrice since then. He was responsible for City winning the 2021 EFL Cup, scoring the only goal of the game as City lifted the trophy for the fourth time.
The Manchester City centre-back will, in all possibility, be joining Sergio Ramos, Eric Garcia, Pau Torres and Inigo Martinez as the centre-back options for Spain in Euro 2020 this summer. The squad list is expected to be officially released in seven days.
