England vs India – The history of the Cricket Pataudi Trophy

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world. When you think or research this sport, the first teams you will stumble upon are India and England. India and England as two of the strongest teams in the world of Cricket. The two countries often dominate other teams in Cricket matches. They also frequently play against each other for the Pataudi trophy.

What is the Pataudi Trophy

The Pataudi Trophy is awarded to the Test Cricket series winner between England and India, which takes place in India. This trophy was designed and constructed by Jocelyn Burton, an award-winning British silver and goldsmith. The Pataudi Trophy was first awarded in 2007 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Test Cricket Series between India and England. The trophy is named after the Pataudi Cricketing family. Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi is the only player to play for both India and England in this series.

The player participated on three different occasions on each side. His son served as a long-term captain of the Indian side for more than a decade between the 1960s and the 1970s. The Pataudi family’s significant role in the Test Series led to the trophy being named after them. This trophy is presented to the victorious team as a sign of victory. India took home the trophy in 2007. However, England has won the last three series and currently holds the Pataudi Trophy.

The cricket rivalry between England and India

The cricket rivalry between England and India is one of the oldest and the biggest rivalries in existence which is why there are also a lot of betting sites stacking their odds for the next clashes. This means that the rivalry between India and England is more than a century old. Even after the independence of the country, the rivalry between the two countries has not ceased. The greatest rivalry between the two nations lies in the game of Cricket. For this reason, cricket matches between India and England are worth watching because they are full of competition and thrill.

The Test Match between England and India started in 1952 in Madras. During this match, India won over England for the first time with eight runs. The victory India had over England during their first Test only ignited their rivalry more. During this match, Vinoo Mankad, one of the best Indian players, returned with 8-55 in the first innings, followed by a 4-53 in the second. This performance played a significant role in India’s victory. This was the first time India won in a cricket match against England.

Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi achieved an attacking 103 in just 162 minutes, smashing 16 fours and two sixes. This performance helped India amass 428 in the first innings of the fifth and last Test held in Chennai. This resulted in a win for India. It was the first series win for India against England.

These two wins were significant for India since they had lost to England for several years in a row. Since the beginning of the 2000s, the two teams’ rivalry has been at an all-time high as they keep alternating their wins. In 2001, India won the three-test series. In the following year, the four-test series ended in a 1-1 draw. In 2005, the three-test series between India and England also ended in a draw.

In 2007, India won their first series in England since 1986, and the two draws in the previous years. This does not mean that India has never won the series in the 2000s. It only means that the team only won during home games and not away matches. England came back at the top in 2011 by winning the game by 4-0. India won the 2014 series while England took home the trophy in 2016. Since then, the trophy has not left England.

It is also worth mentioning that, before the Pataudi trophy was introduced, the two teams had played against each other for fourteen series. In the fourteen series, England had won 11 times, and India only had two victories. They also had one draw.

Final word

Other than the Test series, the two teams have also had other memorable matches like the Oval Match in 1871 and the 1983 World Cup Matches, where they were the strongest teams.

Currently, the Pataudi trophy is presented to the winners in England. In India, the Anthony De Mello Trophy is given to the winner of the England-India Test Series. However, there have been attempts to make the Pataudi Trophy the price for the winners both in India and England.
