One of the most talked-about transfer sagas of the summer is officially over — Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old Ivorian winger Yan Diomandé from RB Leipzig, with the deal potentially rising to €140 million.

The Transfer: Everything Confirmed

Real Madrid officially announced the signing of Diomandé on Thursday afternoon. The Ivorian has signed a seven-year deal in Madrid until 2033. A source told ESPN that Madrid will pay a €125 million fee, plus €10 million in easily-achievable bonuses and a further €5 million in bonuses that are harder to achieve.

If those bonuses are achieved, the deal would represent a record transfer for Madrid, eclipsing what was paid for Jude Bellingham in 2023 and Eden Hazard in 2019.

That initial fee matches the Bundesliga transfer record, previously set by Florian Wirtz’s €125 million move from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool last summer. For RB Leipzig, Diomandé is now the most expensive sale in the club’s history.

How the Deal Was Done

Real Madrid had a previous £85.4m (€100m) bid rejected for the 19-year-old, with Leipzig wanting significantly more to let him go — which they have now secured.

It comes after Paris Saint-Germain ruled themselves out of signing Diomandé. The Ivory Coast international had previously indicated a preference to join the Ligue 1 side earlier this summer and agreed a contract with them until 2031.

Liverpool also expressed an interest in Diomandé, but were not willing to pay more than £85m. Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester City were also keen on the Ivorian.

He left RB Leipzig’s preseason camp on Thursday morning to undergo a medical in Spain ahead of his move being confirmed.

Real Madrid’s Busy Summer Window

Diomandé is the latest arrival in a busy summer for Real Madrid, who have already signed Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espí this window.

Madrid are looking to win back LaLiga under new coach José Mourinho, having gone two seasons without winning a major trophy.

Yan Diomandé: An Extraordinary Rise

This is the story of how a player went from high school soccer in Yulee, Florida, to tearing apart Bundesliga defences in less than three years.

Born in Abidjan in 2006, Diomandé moved to the USA at a young age and joined the DME Academy in Florida, with his performances for associate team AS Frenzi leading to an undefeated season and the local league title in 2023.

A trial with Scottish side Rangers followed in October that year, but he ultimately returned to DME until November 2024, before signing his first professional contract with Spanish La Liga side Leganés.

He made his La Liga debut on March 29, 2025, in a challenging match against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. His first professional goal came on May 11, 2025, in a 3-2 victory against RCD Espanyol.

In July 2025, Diomandé’s ascent reached a new height when he signed a five-year deal with RB Leipzig, who reportedly triggered his €20 million release clause.

A Record-Breaking Season at Leipzig

Signed from Spanish outfit Leganés in the summer of 2025, Diomandé enjoyed a sensational debut campaign in Germany, registering 13 goals and 10 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions.

When Yan Diomandé scored three goals in 18 second-half minutes against Eintracht Frankfurt on December 6, 2025, he became the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score a hat-trick, at 19 years and 22 days old — a record that had stood untouched since Walter Bechtold in 1965.

The Ivorian forward’s performances earned him the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award and attracted interest from several of Europe’s top clubs.

In a Bundesliga match in November 2025, he was recorded as the fastest player on the pitch, reaching a speed of 35.55 km/h.

Diomandé’s Farewell to Leipzig

Saying goodbye isn’t easy for me,” Diomandé said in a video posted to Leipzig’s X account. “When I came to Leipzig a year ago, many of you didn’t know who I was, but the club trusted me from day one and gave me a chance to prove myself at this level.”

What Diomandé Brings to Real Madrid

Diomandé was not only valuable because of his goals and assists, but also because of the unpredictability he brought to Leipzig’s attack. His ability to break defensive structures, carry the ball under pressure and create opportunities from individual moments made him a unique weapon.

It was the how: the explosive dribbles past multiple defenders, the clinical finishing with both feet, the relentless counter-pressing, and the tactical intelligence to exploit space in transition.
