Leaked camera screenshots have confirmed one of the most anticipated features of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra—continuous optical zoom powered by a 200MP Leica camera. Set to launch in China during Christmas week, possibly December 25, this flagship smartphone marks a major advancement in mobile photography technology.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra: Revolutionary Camera System Details

| Launch Date | ~December 25, 2025 | China first |
True Optical Zoom Breakthrough
Screenshots circulating on Weibo reveal that beyond standard zoom positions (0.6x, 1x, 2x), the Xiaomi 17 Ultra offers continuous optical zoom between 3x and 4.3x, covering focal lengths from 70mm to 100mm. This represents genuine variable focal length capability rather than digital interpolation between fixed lens positions.
Marketing materials specifically mention “Leica 200 MP continuous optical zoom” and “high-fidelity optical quality,” indicating Xiaomi prioritizes quality over extended zoom range compared to competitors. While the zoom range remains similar to the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, the implementation delivers superior optical performance.
Sensor Upgrade and Tradeoffs
The massive 1/1.4-inch ISOCELL HPE sensor represents a substantial upgrade from the predecessor’s 1/2.51-inch IMX858. Larger sensors capture more light, enabling better low-light performance, improved dynamic range, and enhanced detail retention—critical for telephoto photography where light is often limited.
However, the continuous zoom system involves tradeoffs. The aperture changes from F/2.2 at 70mm to F/2.9 at 100mm zoom, both representing slight downgrades compared to the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Additionally, the telemacro function appears absent from the new system, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
Additional Camera Enhancements
Beyond the revolutionary zoom system, Xiaomi has confirmed a Leica APO lens for the 17 Ultra, reducing chromatic aberration and improving edge-to-edge sharpness. A new 1-inch main sensor has also been confirmed, continuing Xiaomi’s commitment to flagship-level imaging hardware typically reserved for dedicated cameras.
The camera app screenshots also reveal standard zoom positions of 0.6x, 1x, and 2x alongside the variable telephoto zoom, suggesting a versatile multi-camera system covering ultra-wide to telephoto ranges seamlessly.
Launch and Availability
Xiaomi has confirmed the 17 Ultra launch in China during Christmas week, with December 25 being the most likely date. Global availability typically follows within months, with recent FCC certification suggesting international markets including Europe (possibly as the “Leica Leitzphone Edition”) will receive the device in early 2026.
