The Films, Briefly

1. Assi (2025) Set in rural Rajasthan, Assi follows an 80-year-old woman who refuses to be silenced by the men of her village. Radhika Madan delivers a career-best performance in a story about dignity, defiance, and the power of one stubborn voice.

2. Queen (2014) Rani (Kangana Ranaut) gets left at the altar — and goes on her honeymoon solo anyway. What unfolds is a joyful, tender film about a woman finding herself for the very first time. No hero. No rescue. Just Rani, becoming.

3. Mardaani (2014) Rani Mukerji as Shivani Shivaji Roy is absolutely electric — a no-nonsense Mumbai cop taking on a child trafficking operation single-handedly. Raw, gripping, and genuinely important.

4. Kahaani (2012) Vidya Bagchi arrives in Kolkata, heavily pregnant, searching for her missing husband. Nothing is what it seems. Vidya Balan carries this thriller entirely on her shoulders, and it remains one of Indian cinema’s finest performances.

5. Thappad (2020) One slap. That’s all it takes for Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) to realize she deserves more from her marriage, her family, and herself. A quiet, devastating film that asks every viewer to sit with some uncomfortable questions.

6. Dangal (2016) Mahavir Singh Phogat trains his daughters to become wrestling champions in a country that told them to stay home. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra make Dangal far more than a sports film — it’s a reckoning.

7. Pink (2016) Three women. One accusation. A courtroom that refuses to listen. Amitabh Bachchan’s blistering defence aside, this film belongs to Taapsee Pannu, Andrea Tariang, and Kirti Kulhari — and their refusal to be shamed into silence.

8. Raazi (2018) Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) is a 20-year-old newlywed. She’s also a spy for India. Based on a true story, Raazi is a masterclass in restrained, emotionally devastating storytelling — and Alia’s finest hour.

9. Chhapaak (2020) Malti (Deepika Padukone) is an acid attack survivor who fights back in court and in life. Based on the real story of Laxmi Agarwal, Chhapaak is uncomfortable, brave, and absolutely necessary viewing.

Why These Films Still Matter

Good cinema doesn’t just entertain — it shifts perspectives. Each film on this list challenges something: a law, a marriage, a tradition, a silence. They don’t ask for sympathy for their female leads. They demand respect. And that’s the difference.
