1. Jailer 2 — Tamil, October 15
Rajinikanth is back, and he’s brought the whole neighborhood with him. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 picks up the story of the retired officer from 2023’s Jailer, sending him up against enemies more dangerous than anything he faced the first time. The cast list alone is a headline: SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Yogi Babu, Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Vijay Sethupathi and Hrithik Roshan all feature. The official trailer drops October 5, with two more singles landing before it. This is the film every other release on this list is quietly competing with.
2. Baththa — Tamil, October 1
Director Balaji Tharaneetharan sets this one in 1986 Madras, where an eight-year-old boy accidentally traps Baththa, the neighbourhood’s most feared enforcer, inside a school restroom. What follows isn’t revenge, it’s an unlikely friendship. As hunger wears Baththa down, the film peels back his fearsome reputation to reveal a softer, more vulnerable side that only a few people ever get to see. Vijay Sethupathi leads, alongside Lijomol Jose, in what looks like a warm, character-driven change of pace from typical action fare.
3. Bail — Kannada, October 2
Shiva Rajkumar plays Vijay Kumar, a retired officer still haunted by one case the system never let him close. When justice doesn’t come the legal way, he walks away from his old life to get it himself. Director Pavan Wadeyar builds a story about how a personal vendetta spirals into betrayal and a cycle of violence Vijay can’t easily escape. Sanjana Anand, Dheekshith Shetty and veteran actor Jayaram round out the cast in what promises to be a slow-burn revenge drama.
4. Don’t Trouble The Trouble — Telugu-Malayalam, October 2
Fahadh Faasil plays Suri, a street-smart con artist who latches onto a schoolgirl named Divya, thinking she’s an easy mark. Turns out she’s an actual wish-granting genie, and things spiral fast when Divya accidentally makes her own parents vanish. Director Shashank Yeleti mixes fantasy and comedy as Suri is forced to help fix the mess he stumbled into, and in the process discovers care and responsibility he never had before. It’s a bilingual release, which should widen its reach across two industries.
5. AK 47 (Aadarsha Kutumbam House No: 47) — Telugu, October 9
Venkatesh Daggubati plays Chittibabu, the head of a family that looks picture-perfect from the outside. Director Trivikram Srinivas, known for sharp family dramas with comic timing, digs into what happens when a single incident cracks that image open and long-buried secrets spill out. The family has to confront its differences and figure out what actually holds them together. Srinidhi Shetty, Nara Rohith and Nivetha Pethuraj round out a cast built for an emotional, comedy-laced ensemble drama.
6. Sigma — Tamil, October 2
This one marks the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, son of superstar Thalapathy Vijay, and it’s already generating buzz. Sundeep Kishan plays Guru, an ordinary radio host secretly moonlighting as a treasure hunter, who plans a Rs 500-crore heist after being betrayed and underestimated once too often. With fellow radio jockey Sam pulled into the plan, Guru assembles a crew to take on the ruthless Kotlapadi Veeraiya Reddy, navigating double-crosses and chases while trying not to lose his moral compass along the way.
7. Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai — Tamil, October 1
Director Ram delivers one of the stranger, more ambitious films on this list. On a rain-soaked night train, 32-year-old Raghu meets Muthu, a mysterious stranger who claims to be 8,000 years old. A small incident involving a rat pulls the two into deep conversations about mortality and survival. Through flashbacks, Muthu’s centuries-spanning love for Aadhira, a woman reborn across different eras, unfolds, and Raghu gets pulled into Muthu’s search for redemption. Nivin Pauly, Soori and Anjali headline this genre-blending romantic thriller.
8. Itllu Arjuna — Telugu, October 30
Director Mahesh Uppala centers this one on Arjun, a speech-impaired young man with extraordinary physical strength who communicates entirely through expression and action. He falls for his neighbour Keerthi, who’s one of the few people who truly understands him. When a powerful antagonist named Peddanna targets Keerthi, Arjun transforms into her protector, turning a quiet love story into a full-blown action drama. Anaswara Rajan leads opposite newcomer Aniesh.
9. Irandu Vaanam — Tamil, October 23
A simpler premise, but a promising one: an idealistic young woman and a carefree young man, total opposites, collide into an unexpected romance. Director Ram Kumar keeps the plot details light for now, but the pairing of Vishnu Vishal and Mamitha Baiju in a fantasy-tinged love story should draw in romance fans looking for something gentler amid the month’s heavier action lineup.
10. #Cult — Telugu, October 30
Vishwak Sen writes, directs and stars in this slasher thriller about a group of friends who travel to Goa for a big night out, only to find themselves locked inside an exclusive underground party. What starts as a celebration turns into a survival game run by a mysterious “Game Master.” As the challenges escalate, trust between the friends collapses, and they have to work together to outsmart their captor before becoming his next victims. Gayatri Bhardwaj co-stars in what looks like October’s designated horror-thriller pick.
11. Ranabaali — Telugu, October 16
The month’s biggest period epic. Director Rahul Sankrityan sets Ranabaali during the devastating Madras Famine of 1876–1878, when colonial exploitation and food shortages pushed ordinary people to the brink. Vijay Deverakonda plays a fierce warrior who, alongside his wife Jayamma, transforms into a rebel leader fighting for his people’s survival and freedom. Rashmika Mandanna co-stars, with Arnold Vosloo joining the cast, giving this one real international scale alongside its historical weight.
Which One Should You Watch First?
If you want scale and star power, start with Jailer 2. Want something offbeat, go for Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai or Don’t Trouble The Trouble. And if historical drama is your thing, Ranabaali is unmissable.
