‘Women Like Us’: Whoopi Goldberg Leads Star-Studded New Netflix Comedy

A powerhouse cast of Hollywood veterans is coming together for a heartfelt new comedy, marking the first-ever collaboration between two major production banners — one of them founded by the Obamas.

Women Like Us: Overview

The Story

The film follows a recently widowed woman who’s pulled into a Hamptons weekend by her lifelong best friends and sister on what should have been her 30th wedding anniversary. What starts as a getaway turns into a reckoning with grief, marriage, sisterhood, and the idea that dreams don’t come with an expiration date.

A First-Time Studio Pairing

Women Like Us marks the debut collaboration between MACRO Film Studios, founded by Charles D. King, and Higher Ground, the media company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama. Both are producing alongside James Lopez, Poppy Hanks, Anikah McLaren, and Mark R. Wright, with Michelle Obama and Charles D. King serving as executive producers.

Behind the Camera

Director Tasha Smith is already deeply tied to Netflix, both directing the upcoming film ‘Tis So Sweet and starring in the series Survival of the Thickest. The script comes from Ali Kinney, known for her writing work on Ginny & Georgia, alongside Tracy Oliver of Girls Trip and Harlem fame.

A Growing Slate for Higher Ground

This project adds to Higher Ground’s expanding Netflix catalog, which includes titles like Leave the World Behind, Bodkin, Rustin, and American Symphony, along with upcoming projects All the Sinners Bleed and The Altruists. MACRO Film Studios brings its own pedigree, having backed acclaimed films like Mudbound and They Cloned Tyrone.

With filming set for this fall, fans can expect Women Like Us to hit Netflix sometime in late 2027 or early 2028.
