Why Do Some Smart TVs Have Cameras? The Real Purpose Behind That Tiny Bezel Lens

Spotting a small camera tucked into your smart TVs bezel can catch you off guard — and it’s fair to wonder why it’s there. The good news: these cameras usually serve a specific purpose, and most current TVs don’t even have one. Here’s the full picture.

The Main Reason: Video Calling

The most common use for a built-in TV camera is video calling — letting your television double as a big-screen version of a laptop webcam for services like Skype, Google Meet, or a manufacturer’s own calling app. It’s the same idea as a video chat at your desk, just scaled up to the living room.

Gesture Control and Face-Based Features

Some models have used the camera for gesture controls, like waving to change the volume, or for facial recognition that automatically adjusts picture settings depending on who’s watching. On TVs marketed partly as fitness devices, the camera can even track body movement for exercise apps.

Why Most Smart TVs Skip the Camera Entirely

Because video calling on a TV never took off the way it did on phones, built-in cameras have become fairly rare. Many manufacturers now sell clip-on external cameras as optional accessories instead, aimed at the smaller group of buyers who actually want the feature.

How Privacy Concerns Are Usually Handled

Given the obvious concern of a camera facing into your living room, most TVs that do have one include either a physical shutter you can slide over the lens, or a mechanism where the camera retracts into the TV’s body when not in use. If your TV lacks either, a simple piece of tape over the lens works as an easy precaution. For broader guidance on securing connected devices at home, the FTC’s consumer privacy guide is a solid, official resource.

Conclusion

Smart TV cameras exist mainly for video calling and, on select models, gesture or fitness features — but they never went mainstream because most people simply don’t want to video call from the couch, which is why the few TVs that have one usually build in a way to cover the lens.
