What Is “The Substitute” About?

The story follows three young men whose conflicting desires and personal struggles push them toward an irreversible crime on the day of the college entrance exam. At the centre is a top-ranking student from a low-income family. He attends a prestigious private high school on a special scholarship, and a blackmailer who knows his secret forces him to take the exam on someone else’s behalf.

The Poster

The new poster shows Nam Jae Yeop (Bae Hyeon Seong) and Kang Geon Tae (Cha Kang Yoon) staring ahead with steely determination, hinting at the battle to come. An optical mark recognition (OMR) answer sheet is layered over the two characters. They head in the same direction, but each is driven by a different desire, and the poster asks what answers they’ll choose when their futures are at stake. Meet the Three Leads

Nam Jae Yeop (Bae Hyeon Seong).
He seems to have it all: a wealthy background, handsome looks and excellent grades. It’s a facade, though. When his life strays from the path his father laid out, cracks appear, and he starts spiralling like a grenade with its pin pulled.

Kang Geon Tae (Cha Kang Yoon).
A remarkable student from a low-income family, he ranks first in his class at the prestigious Jeonggyeong High School on a special scholarship. Desperate to escape poverty, he accepts an unjust offer he can’t refuse, and gets caught in a whirlwind of events.

Joo Hee Dong (Park Yoon Ho).
He looks up to Kang Geon Tae and takes odd pride in being his only confidant. Then Nam Jae Yeop arrives and begins to fracture their friendship, setting off unpredictable changes in his life.
