Every IPL season has one. That one player who waits quietly in the shadows, match after match, warming the bench — and then arrives when least expected and makes the biggest noise possible.

On May 2, 2026, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Ramakrishna Ghosh wrote his first chapter in IPL folklore. His debut wicket? None other than India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav.

The Wait Was Long — But the Moment Was Perfect

Ramakrishna Ghosh finally ended his long wait to make his debut in the IPL as CSK decided to hand him an opportunity in the game against Mumbai Indians. The youngster from Maharashtra was bought by the five-time champions for ₹30 lakhs in the IPL 2025 mega auction, following which he was retained before IPL 2026 as well. However, Ghosh warmed the bench throughout the IPL 2025 season and for the first half of the tournament in 2026 as well, before finally being handed his debut.

Nearly two full seasons on the sidelines. And when the yellow cap finally arrived, he didn’t blink.

Debut Wicket: The SKY is Not the Limit

Ghosh made an instant impact on his arrival in the IPL, bagging the prized wicket of Suryakumar Yadav as his first scalp. The Indian T20I captain was caught out at the sweeper cover as he attempted a big hit but failed to get the distance. Ramakrishna celebrated his maiden IPL wicket by pointing towards the sky as SKY departed.

A debut wicket. Against SKY. At Chepauk. The stuff of cricketing fairy tales.

The Numbers Behind the Man

The Maharashtra all-rounder made his List A and T20 debut in 2023 and 2022 respectively and now has 21 wickets from 11 List A games. He proved to be a force with the bat too, having scored 246 runs from 11 List A matches, including a 73-run knock against Punjab in his first game of VHT 2025/26.

What truly put Ghosh on the map, though, was a stunning performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He put CSK on notice with a 7-wicket haul against Punjab, finishing with figures of 7/42 in 9.2 overs — his best in List A cricket. That spell is likely what kept CSK convinced he was worth the wait.

Why CSK Believed in Him

In a league that often discards players after one blank season, CSK retained Ghosh not once but twice. The BCCI’s official IPL player records show how few domestic performers get that level of backing from franchises without a single IPL appearance. It speaks volumes about what the CSK think tank saw in him behind closed doors.

Ramakrishna Ghosh’s story is a reminder that patience in cricket isn’t passive — it’s the quiet accumulation of readiness. When his moment came, he was ready. SKY wasn’t.
